USA Hockey 2024 High School Hockey National Championships
West Chester, Pennsylvania / March 20th-24, 2024
Sponsored by USA Hockey and Chipotle Restaurants, the National Championship tournament is held in West Chester,
Pennsylvania. It is an invitational tourney featuring the top team(s) from all over the United States.
The tournament is held in the Ice Line Quad Rinks; a four sheet facility made-up of four standard sized NHL rinks and is
home the West Chester University of Pennsylvania men’s and woman’s hockey teams and the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers.

USA Hockey 2024 National Tournament Top Scorers
Sioux City places seven players among the tournamentn’s top ten scorers.
Nate Solma Grant Harder Karson Fitch Tegan Doleman
Nate Solma grabs ten goals and five assists for fifteen tournament points. He is held scoreless in opening contest but explodes
for five goals in game two eventually finishing as the tournamet’s fifth highest scorer. Grant Harder records seven goals and
five assists for a dozen points. He had a pair of two goal outings that helped propell the team to the championship; game one
aginst Rushmore and the quarter-final game he scored the first two goals of the game, setting the pace for a win against Omaha.
Karson Fitch would record five goals and five assists; three of his goals are game-winners against Greenville, Omaha and East
Islip. Tegan Doleman would tally three goals and seven assists including the go-ahead goal in the first period of the
championship game and an assist on the game winner.
Blaze Bauer Ryan Hedquist Hunter Echter
Blaze Bauer grabs four red-lighters and nine assists. His best outing came in the semi-final when his two goals and an assists
helped the Metros past Bishop Canevin Crusaders and into the championship game. Ryan Hedquist would tally two red-
lighters; his biggest is a short-handed game-winner against Bishop Canevin Crusaders in the semi-finals. Hunter Echter has
a pair of goals and three assists, rounding out the team’s top scorers. His second goal of the week was a biggie-putting the
Metros on the board in the championship game.
Between the Pipes
Gunnar Moninger Cam Patrick
Goaltenders Gunnar Moninger and Cameron Patrick take the ice this week during the national tournament. Cam,
like the regular varsity season, shoulders the starting position and plays in all six tountament contests. He grabs six wins
and surrenders only eight goals for a tournent best goals against average of 1.33 and a top three save percentag of .941.
Gunnar, while serving as Cam’s Steve Janaszak, did see time in the Greenville game, preserving the Metros victory and
sending them to the quarter-finals.
Both Sioux City goaltenders carry the mail for their teams this regular MHSHL season. Freshmen, Gunnar Moninger
takes on the starting duties for the junior varsity squad during the regular and post season tournament. He finishs the JV
season with a Mid-West League leading twenty-two victories, thirteen shut-outs and the second higest goals against
average. Another young player, sophmore Cam Patrick suits-up as the Metros varsity starter and does not dissapoint;
he grabs League leading stats including twenty-eight wins, five shut-outs, most minutes played and the league’s second
best goals against average and save percentage.

The Metros coaching staff is ripe with successful hockey experience. Assistant Coach Scott Patrick is a past Metro
goaltender and State Tournament championship runner-up. During his junior season in net, he was the only
IHSHL/MHSHL player selected as the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player and not play in the championship game.
Head Coach Jesse Monell is also a past Metro player and a two-time State Champion. He also played three seasons for the
Sioux City Musketeers (USHL). He would return to Sioux City coaching at the high school level eventually winning the
regular and post season Championship as well as the Metros first National Championship in 2018.
Chris Hedquist is also a past Metro player making a pair of apperances playing in the championship game. His sophmore season
the Metros finished as the tournemant runner-up and the following season another State Championship for the Metros.
2024 USA Hockey Division II (Combined) Participants
Tournament teams are divided into two different classifications. Division I or Pure Teams are teams drawing from one specific school
district. Division II or Combined/Blended Teams are organizations that will draw players from multiple school districts or
surrounding towns. As Midwest League (MHSHL) regular season Champions, the Metros arrive ready to represent the state of Iowa.
Divided into four different pools, each team plays their opponents once. Only the first two teams advance to Saturday’s semi-final
play-off round; pitting the winner of one pool taking on the second place finisher of a different pool. Later that day, the winners
of both contests play for an opportunity to advance to the National Championship game the following day.
This first place finish during the regular season qualifies the Metros to represent the State of Iowa in the 2024 USA Hockey National
Championships. Joining the Metros in the NHL Division (Division II) are teams from South Dakota, West Virginia and North Carolina.

Wednesday, March 20th
Sioux City (Iowa) Metros vs. Rushmore (South Dakota) Thunder
Sioux City Metros
Who They Are: Located in Sioux City, IA, the greater Siouxland area has a population of approximately one hundred
thousand people. The Metros also draw in players in from several surrounding towns as well. They are members of the
Midwest High School Hockey League (MHSHL). They have won the league championship eight times. The most recent
being in 2023 and in 2018 they were also the USA Hockey National Champions.
How They Got There: The Metros dominated the thirty-two game regular season; boasting twenty-eight wins and just
four losses. They had a pair of players among the top ten league scorers and a goaltender among the league’s best. The
Metros head coach is selected as the MHSHL coach of the year.
How They Did: The eventual National Champions are an offensive force to be reckoned with this year. The team grabs
forty-three goals in six games, averaging just over seven goals a game and would surrender only eight total goals. Every
rostered player would record, at minim, a point and that includes one of the two goaltenders. The Metros top five players
recorded fifty-six tournament points alone and placed seven players among the tournament’s top ten scorers.
Rushmore Thunder
Who They Are: Located in Rapid City, South Dakota, this team draws players from the surrounding area with an
approximate population of 145,000 residence. They are members of the twelve team South Dakota High
School Hockey League.
How They Got There: The Thunder finished this season as the state’s championship runner-up, having fell to the
Brookings Rangers in overtime. However, the Thunder would still secure this trip to nationals, representing the state
as a Division 2 team. This would be the Thunder’s third appearance in the state championship game in four seasons.
They would finish the season in second place with nineteen wins during the twenty-two game schedule.
Note: The Thunder JV team has played in six of the last eight championship games, winning five of them including the
last three consecutive seasons.
How They Did: Rushmore would finish the round robin play with two wins and a loss. First defeating Greenville Road
Warriors and Wheeling Central Catholic Knights and the mention loss to the Sioux City Metros. This would qualify them
for the cross-divisional quarter finals where they easily beat the Gillette Grizzles (Wyoming) and would advance to the
semi-finals where they would come up short against the east Islip Chiefs (New York).
Round Robin Game 1
March 20th, 2024
3-Metros vs. Rushmore Thunder-1
Both teams take the ice and spend the first dozen minutes getting the feel of their new home rink for the next week. For the
Metros that’s over 1200 miles from their friendly confines of the IBP Ice Center. Cash Frigge is the first to find the back of
the net when he taks a pass from Noah Grahm giving the Metros the first goal of the game and the lead after one.

The defensive play continues into the next period until Grant Harder finds the net, not once, but two times giving the
team a confident lead three goal lead. Ryan Hedquist, Charlie Egdorf and Nate Solma record assists on Grant’s goals.

However, the third period sees a potential momentum swing, as the Thunder grab an early period tally. They continue to
pepper the Sioux City net minder as the Metros slip into a defensive mode, focusing on protecting their fragile lead.

The Thunder would out-shoot the Metros in all three periods, launching thirty-four total shots on net. However,
goaltender Cam Patrick stays nearly perfect, stopping all but one of them. This opening tournament victory sets
the pace for the eventual National Champions.

Junior Ryan Hedquist plays in all six tournament games recording a pair of goals; one against Greenville and
the game winner in the semi-finals against Bishop Canevin. He would also record five helpers for a seven point
weekend. Another junior, Riley Ebner gets in the book scoring a goal in the Greenville game and adding a pair
of assists in six games. Senor, captain and Metros leading scorer Nate Solma finished among the tourney’s top
three scorers. He would collect ten goals, including a pair of hat tricks against Wheeling and Greenville and add
five additional assists ending the week with fifteen points.

Thursday, March 21st
Sioux City (Iowa) Metros vs. Wheeling Central (West Virginia) Knights
Wheeling Central Catholic Knights
Who They Are: Located in West Virginia, Wheeling has a city-wide population of thirty thousand people. Central Catholic
High School boasts a student enrollment of approximately 300 students.
How They Got There: Wheeling Central would defeat the Martinsburg Vipers; winning their seventh state title in the newly
formed West Virginia Hockey League. These WV teams also play schedules in other geographic leagues including the Western
Pennsylvania Hockey League, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League and the Kentucky High School Hockey League.
How They Did: The Knights would have a short stay at Nationals; recording just a single win against the Greenville Road
Warriors and suffering defeats to Wheeling Central and the Sioux City Metros.
Round Robin Game 2
March 21st, 2024

Game two sees the West Virginia team severely outmatched by the offensive minded Metros. Nine different Metros score
goals in this eventual offensive explosion. However, the first period ends with Metros Tegan Doleman and Grant Harder
finding the back of the net. In this seemingly tight game, the period ends with the Metros ahead by just a goal.

As the second period starts, so does a scoring display unmatched so far in the national tournament. Nate Solma grabs the
first of three goals in this single period and Grant Harder adds his second of the game. Noah Dirkschneider, Noah
Graham and Karson Fitch also record their first goals of the tournament, giving the Metros a commanding lead.

The third period is more of the same as Nate Solma and Blaze Bauer add two more tallies each. That gives Nate a total of
five goals in a single game. Noah Dirkschneider, Demetri Tsiobanos, Noah Graham and Grant Harder all add single
goals this final period.

In addition to Nate Solma‘s five goals, he adds an assist giving him six points for the night. Grant Harder also grabs a
hat trick and two helpers for a five point outing. Noah Graham, and Noah Dirkschneider have two goal games, as does
Blaze Bauer who finishes with five total points. Teagan Doleman also adds three helpers to his single tally, for a four
point game. Blake Dunagan finished with three assists and Charlie Egdorf with two.

Sioux City launched sixty-two shots on goal and recorded a tournament high of forty total points. This includes seventeen
goals and twenty-three assists in a single game. This convincing win puts everyone on notice to the Metros offensive
scoring power and sends them on to game three of round robin play.

Jackson Pinny played in all six contests, the junior recorded a goal against Greenville and added a nother assist for a two
point outing. Another junior, Blaze Bauer played in all six games grabbing five goals and four assists for nine points. He
recorded a five point game, incliding a hatrick against Wheeling and a two goal game against Bishop Canevin. Senior
Cash Frigge played in five games, collecting a goal in the win over Rushmore and two additional assists.

Friday, March 22nd
Sioux City (Iowa) Metros vs. Greenville (North Carolina) Road Warriors
Greenville Road Warriors
Who they Are: Located in Greenville, South Carolina, with a population of approximately seventy-five thousand people the
youth program takes in players from the surrounding area. They play a twenty-two game high school schedule as members
of the South Carolina Scholastic Hockey Association as governed by the South Carolina Amateur Hockey Association.
(Note: Several of these North Carolina teams also play a full/partial schedule with other non-conference geographically
located high school teams.)
How They Got There: They would finish in first place during the regular season with seventeen and five overall league
record. This season would also mark the seventh time the Road Warriors have been crowned SC State Champions. Their head
coach was selected as the Coach of the Year for the South Carolina Amateur Hockey Association and is both a two-time
regular season and State Champion.
How They Did: Greenville was another them this weekend with a short stay and fell to all three teams in the Division;
Wheeling, Greenville and Sioux City.
Round Robin Game 3
March 22nd, 2024
9-Metros vs. Greenville Road Warriors-1
Game three sees the Metros taking on the soon to be winless Greenville Roar Warriors. This one will prove to be another high
scoring affair featuring both the usual scorers and a hand full of new faces getting on the scoresheet. Sioux City puts seventeen
shot on goal; three of them from Hunter Echter, Nate Solma, with the game winner and Karson Fitch, find the back of the net.
The end of the first period sees the Metros holding on to a two goal lead.

The second period is more of the same, with the Metros launching a very efficient fifteen shots on goal with four of them
going in. Ryan Hedquist grabs his first tally of the tournament, Nate Solma would grab two red-lighters this period giving
him his second tournament hat trick and Jackson Pinney would end the period’s scoring with his first goal of the week.
Sioux City would hold the Warriors to zero scoring chances this period.

In the final stanza, the Metros would take their foot off the gas and are limited to just eleven shots on goal. However
two of those shots make their way accrodd the goals line including one from Reily Ebner, his first of the week and
the final tally of the game from Tegan Doleman.

Nate Solma would finish with three goals and an assist, Ryan Hedquist would add a pair of assists to his goal for a
three point game. Noah Dirkschneider and Hunter Echter would finish with two points. Goaltender Cam Patrick
stops eleven Warrior shots and heads into the play-offs surrendering just one goal per game.

Junior Hunter Echter grabs a pair of goals this week; one against Greenville and another against East islip in the
championship game. The would also record three total assists as well. Captain Grant Harder played in all six games
recording seven goals five assists; his dozen points was fifth best amoung all scorers. He would record a hat trick
against Wheeling and multi-goal games against Rushmore and Omaha. Sophmore Noah Graham sports a terrific
national tournament; bagging a pair of goals in the Wheeling game and single assists against Rushmore and East Islip.

Saturday, March 23rd
Sioux City (Iowa) Metros vs. Omaha (Nebraska) Jr. Lancers
Omaha Jr. Lancers
Who they Are: The Omaha Jr. Lancers are based in Omaha Nebraska. They draw their team members from a city wide
area with a total population of nearly a half million people. Omaha also boasts a top tier AAA program and a USHL team
which are a huge draws for many of the best youth players in the mid-west. The Lancers are members of the three-state
wide Midwest High School Hockey League.
How They Got There: The team would play a regular season schedule of thirty-two games and finish in third overall with
twenty-five wins and six losses. Despite their six losses this season, the Lancers are predominately one of the top teams
on a regular basis in the very tough MHSHL. As the top finishing team in Nebraska, they would d grab the opportunity
to play in the National Tournament.
How they Did: Playing in the Liberty Division, the Lancers would grab a pair of wins against the Owensboro Rampage
and the Evansville Thunder and lose to the Gillette Grizzlies. This would qualify Omaha for cross-divisional quarter
finals match-up between two of the MHSHL’s biggest rivals, the Sioux City Metros. In typical fashion this match-up was
a nail-bitter until the very end but the Lancers would fall short to the eventual National Champions.
Quarter-Finals Game 4
March 23rd, 2024
4-Metros vs. Omaha Jr. Lancers-2
The USAH Nationals Quarter-finals pits two very familiar teams against each other; the Omaha Jr. Lancers and the Sioux
City Metros. Both teams are members of the very talented Midwest High School Hockey League and finished first and
third during the regular season.
In what is an expected traditional battle between these two team, this game does not disappoint. The first period is back
and forth, lots of offence but none successful until Grant Harder lights the lamp with just over a minute remaining in
the first for the first lead of the game.
In the second, it’s the Team Captain with his second tally of the game; countering an earlier Lancer goal and again
giving the Metros the lead. Seven minutes later high scoring underclassmen Karson Fitch would extend the lead
to two goals, as the teams head to the locker rooms after two periods of play.

The remaining period sees the Metros again in defensive mode, protecting their two goal lead as the Lancers apply
the pedal to the metal in this must win game. They launch fifteen shots on goal this period with only one finding
the back of the net; cutting the Metros lead to one goal. With just minutes remaining, the Lancers pull their goalie
to apply the extra man pressure. But with fourteen seconds remaining, Nate Solma grabs a loose puck and
buries it in the vacated net, sending the Lancers home and the Metros to the semi-finals.

Hunter Echter, Ryan Hedquist, Nate Solma and even goaltender Cameron Patrick would record assists in this
game. Cam also stopped twenty-eights Omaha shots on goal, including fourteen on the last period alone.

Junior Noah Dirkschneider plays in all six contests and records a pair multi-point outings, including a two goals against
Wheeling and two assists against Greenville. Just a sophomore, the 6’5″ forward Demetri Tsiobanos also gets on a national
championship scoresheet; recording a goal and an assist in the Wheeling game. Charlie Egdorf finishes his senior season
grabbing four assists; two against Wheeling and two separate ones against Rushmore and in the championship game
against East Islip.

Saturday, March 23rd
Sioux City (Iowa) Metros vs. Bishop Canevin (Pennsylvania) Crusaders
Bishop Canevin Crusaders
Who They Are: Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this Catholic School supports approximately 250 students and draws
their players from the greater Pittsburgh area of a population of three hundred thousand people. This high school varsity
league is divided into two conferences; Gold and Blue and is made up of fourteen member teams of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic
Hockey League. All of which play a nineteen games schedule in addition to other non-conference geographically located teams.
How They Got There: The Crusaders would finish first during the regular season, sporting nineteen wins and just a single loss
during the PIHL season. They would grab the top seed in the State Tournament and after advancing in the first round they were
upset in the semi-final game by the eventual state champions.
How They Did: The Crusaders would grab wins against the Northwest Arkansas Ice Hogs and the Faith Lutheran (Kentucky)
Crusaders and fall to the East Islip (NY) Chiefs in round robin play. They would still earn a berth in cross divisional quarter-finals
where the defeated the Oseeo Maple Grove (MN) Saints advancing to the semis against Sioux City.
Semi-Final Game 5
March 23rd, 2024
5-Metros vs. Bishop Canevin Crusaders-1
This tournament game marks the first game for the Metros against an unfamiliar, different division top team. The Crusaders are
a high scoring team recording twenty goals in the last four games and one of their players is the tournament’s high scorer so far.
The opening period sees the Crusaders get on the board first, but a few minutes later Blaze Bauer would tie the game at one.
With just under a minute Ryan Hedquist would tally, giving Sioux City the lead for good. The Metros would dominate this
period; launching eleven shots on goal and fending-off four short-handed situations.

Sioux City would keep the pressure on in the second, putting seventeen more shots on net. While the Crusader goaltending
remained stellar, defenceman Caiden Patrick was able to find the back of the net, giving the Metros a two goal lead.

Sioux City would capitalize on an early period Crusaders penalty when Teagan Doleman would increase the Metros lead
to three. With time running out, the Crusaders desperately want to pull their goaltender but constant pressure from Sioux
City makes that impossible and a late in the period Blaze Bauer’s second goal of the game cements the victory and a trip
to the championship
In addition to two goals, Blaze Bauer would add an assist for a three point outing. Teagan Dolman would add an assist
to his goal and Cash Frigge would add two helpers, both finishing with two points. Grant Harder, Ryan Hedquist
and Caiden Patrick would also add single assists to the scoresheet.

Junior forward Karson Fitch records five goals and five assists; three of his goals are game-winners against Greenville,
Omaha and in the championship game against East Islip. He also logs a five point outing against Wheeling recording
a goal and four assists. Senior defenceman Caiden Patrick gets in the book with a goal against Bishop Canevin semi-
finals match-up and a pair of assists in the Wheeling game.
Blake Dunagan Tegan Doleman
Junior Blake Dunagan is a force to be reckoned with; the 6’3″ 205 pound forward is nearly immovable in the slot. He
grabs four assists this week including three in the Wheeling game and another one against Greenville. Tegan Doleman
would tally three goals; against Greenville, Bishop Canevin and the go-ahead goal in the first period of the championship
game and seven total assists including one on the game winning goal against East Islip.

Sunday, March 24th
Sioux City (Iowa) Metros vs. East Islip (New York) Chiefs
East Islip Chiefs
Who They Are: East Islip is a township located in south central Long Island and draws players from three different local school
districts. The Chief play a twenty-two game schedule as members of the thirteen team Suffolk County High School Hockey League.
How They Got There: The Chiefs would finish the season tied for first place; with seventeen wins, three losses and a pair of
ties they would be selected as this season National Tournament representative. This season would mark their first ever State
title, as well as their return to the National Tournament for the second consecutive season.
How They Did: East Islip would prove to be one of the tougher teams in the combined division. Winning all three games
of round robin play in convincing style; out scoring Bishop Canevin, Faith Lutheran (NV) and NW Arkansas fifteen to four.
They would also post seventeen goals in the quarter and semifinals allowing the Rushmore Thunder and Steinbrenner
Warriors (FL) just five goals. Advancing to the championship finals against the Sioux City Metros.
Championship Game 6
March 23rd, 2024
5-Metros vs. East Islip Chiefs-2
This championship match-up looks to be an exciting one with two extremely offensive minded teams with very solid
goaltending. East Islip boasts the tournament’s top three scorers and Sioux City the tournaments top goaltender by far.
However, in the first period it’s the defense that steals the show with both teams shooting on net a combined
thirteen times and both keepers staying perfect.

The second frame is a total reversal-both teams hit the ice knowing that not scoring, isn’t gonna win any one a championship.
This is a up and down the ice affair with tons of offence, fast breaks and great saves however, it;s East Islip scoring first
and grabbing and holding the game’s momentum for much of the period. However with just over two minutes Hunter Echter
would tie the game and just twenty second later Teagan Doleman give the Metros the lead. But the high scoring Chiefs don’t
go away and quickly counter sending the teams to the locker rooms knotted-up at two.

The third period is another battle between to terrific teams. This period offers-up twenty-three total shots on goals and a pair
of un-successful power-plays for both teams. Just when everyone is thinking overtime – Karson Fitch breaks the tie and fifteen
seconds later Nate Solma gives the Metros a two goal lead. As time runs out for the Chiefs they go with the extra attacker, and
after some initial pressure to tie the game, Karson Fitch is able to corral an errant pass and find the empty net securing a
Championship win for the Metros.

Five different Metros assisted on goals today, including Noah Graham, Charlie Egdorf, Tegan Doleman, Grant Harder
and Nate Solma. Metros goaltender Cam Patrick would face twenty-eight shots for the championship victory.
