This is the Start of the Second decade (1980-1990) of Sioux City Jr. Musketeers/Metros High School Hockey

Nine Teams play a total season of 16 games. IHSHL State Tournament is held in Des Moines March 6th-8th
Des Moines Lincoln and Ankeny leave the league. Sioux City Changes their name to the Metros

Waterloo Public & Columbus, Des Moines Hoover/Roosevelt, Valley, Dowling & Urbandale, Ames, Sioux City & Mason City

The Metros would return to the state tournament with a considerably smaller and less experienced line-up. However, strong goaltending and
a speedy offence made up for lack of physicality and the team held their own throughout the tournament. Unfortunately, a second round loss
would send them home again with a third place finish.

The “Metro” logo is adopted as the official logo of the high school team as well as the official name of the team.

Ames, IA holds an Invitational JV State Tournament.

We are still researching the Heavy Hitter stats from this season. There is so little information from most of these early seasons that
complete information is hard to find. Should you run into any information that helps complete some of these stats please let us
know
. Even partial information can be expanded out for at least, season long estimations.

Between the Pipes
Senior Jamie Lempares and Junior Craig Patrick are set to carry the Jr. Musketeers into the new season. Jamie will garners
the starting position this season and Craig will take on the back-up duties. Sophomore Brett Kieler will also join the net minders
this season.  Together they will lead the Jr. Musketeers to a 7-11 regular season record and a spot in the IHSHL Tournament.
Sophomore goalies Scott Smith and Tim Kulhman also join the team this season.  There is a limited junior varsity program at
this time but they do play some interleague games throughout the season

Alternate Team Captain and Metros MVP Clayton Wiffen shown here playing the Waterloo Columbus Sailors at the Audi. Clayton
Played four seasons for the Jr. Musketeers, three of them spent as an Alternate Captain. He was always the heart of the Jr. Musketeer
offence and his freshman season was a top five scorer and the remaining three season the team’s Leading Scorer.

Did You Know…
Clayton’s mom custom made and sewed some 20 sets of green single striped game socks. They matched the jerseys
last season perfectly. The bonus was they were heavy and hot, so they came in perfect for practices at The Bubble!!!

Brad Hanson
Metros 1980-83

Brad Hanson Played three seasons for the Jr. Musketeers/Metros and is pictured here during his first season. The
following season he would receive SYHA’s Top honors as the recipient of the Ted Neby Award. During his senior season
he was named Team Captain and one of the Metros Leading Scorers until an injury cut his last season short.

goals and four assists during this eighteen game schedule. This season he would be would add an IHSHL All-State Team
Honorable Mention
Award to his well stocked IHSHL trophy case.

Brent Hartman becomes the second Jr. Musketeer/Metros player to finish as a top five team scorer four consecutive seasons.
(Although records are incomplete, his older brother Brian probably also accomplished the feat making his the first.)

Bob Batcheller would log four seasons for the Metros. Joining the team as one of only two freshman, he earned
starting line duties with veterans Paul Kambach and Clayton Wiffen. He was a two-time Metro High Scorer his
last two seasons. As a senior, he would be selected team captain and receive the Metros Most Valuable Player.

Craig Patrick played three seasons for the Metros. He would help backstop the Metros to a pair of third place
finishes at the State Tournament. Last season as a sophomore he would receive SYHA’s highest honor the
Ted Neby Award  and next season a sa senior selected as the Metros Most Valuable Player

Did You know...all three of the Patrick brothers were Metro goalies; Craig played three seasons (79-82) Scott played
four seasons (84-88) and Ross played three seasons (98-01). Scotts ‘s son Colin is now following in dads footsteps
wearing the pads for the Metros.

Craig Patrick
Jr. Musketeers/Metros 1979-82

Goaltender Craig Patrick was with the Jr. Musketeers/Metros for three seasons. Last season, as a sophomore
Craig would receive SYHA’s Ted Neby Award and next season the senior selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player Award.

This Award named for SYHA founding father, Ted Neby was first awarded in 1976 and is still an active SYHA Award. It is
presented annually by the Board of Directors to any SYHA player who exhibits outstanding leadership and community spirit both
on and off the ice. A player who is willing to give his/her skills to the improvement of both our hockey program and our community.

Did You Know…in 2011 Craig revived the defunct Austin Mavericks hockey program; now called the Austin Bruins, the North
American League (NAHL) team remains one of the league’s most competitive programs. The Bruins made back-to-back the
Robertson Cup appearances in 2014 and 2015. In 2016 the lost game five in the Central Division finals.

Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) Tournament Championship
March 6th-8th / Des Moines, IA
The fifth seeded Metros enter the tournament with nine wins and seven losses. They finish the season tightly grouped
around the other four experienced teams from the Des Moines area. Waterloo Columbus is the Tournament favorite, having
lost just one game all season.

Quarter-Final Game
3-Metros vs. Des Moines Valley Tigers-2 SO

March 6th, 1981
The quarter-finals draws the higher ranked and  much favored Des Moines Valley. They finish a pair of game ahead of
the Metros finishing with eleven wins and only five losses. However, after three regulation periods and an eight minute
overtime the game remained locked at a pair of goals each. Shooting second, Clayton Wiffen keeps the shootout even, a
save by Jamie Lempares and a red-lighter by Brent Hartman give the Metros a victory.

Semi-Final Game
0-Metros vs. Waterloo Columbus Sailors-3

March 7th, 1981
The Metros second day match-up is against the Waterloo Columbus Sailors. The parochial school entry from Waterloo is
heavily favored; having  lost just a single game all season and boasting some of the league’s best players. In what could have
been a blow-out, the Metro keep the game against the eventual State Champions respectable surrendering just three goals.

Semi-finals action here against the eventual champions Waterloo Columbus. Dropping the puck in the left photo is
long-time IHSHL and USHL official Mike McCollum. A disallowed Sioux City goal in the second period takes swings
the momentum back to the favorites. The game stay close until a late in the third when an empty net Columbus goal
secures the win for the Sailors and sends the Metros to the consolation game.

Consolation Game
6-Metros vs. Des Moines Hoover/Roosevelt Knights-2

March 8th, 1981
The Metros will re-bound on Sunday as they match-up against the Des Moines Hoover/Roosevelt. The Knights
also boasted a tournament upset beating the fourth seeded Urbandale Jays in the first round. They too would fall
to the other superior team from Waterloo in the semi-finals.
This one’s not even close… Sioux City jumps out to a two goal lead after the first on red-lighters by Clayton Wiffen
and Pat Pinney. Brent Hartman, Mark Adam and Brad Hanson stretch the lead four goals and John Roost‘s
goal in the third period seals the deal for the Metros.

Junior Brad Hanson and exchange student from Stockholm, Sweden Mats Hansson celebrate Brad’s goal near the end
of the second period putting the Metros up 5-1 on the Knights. Dan Holzrichter and Geoff Wilson have a little meet-n-greet
as the game takes a turn from finesse to chippyness as the Metros clearly dominate the Knights. Both defenseman have
a busy night…Geoff Wilson recording sixteen penalty minutes and Dan a dozen before the final horn.

Brad Hanson takes a hard hit from one of the Hoover-Roosevelt players in the consolation game. However, the Metros are
not intimidated and eventually tally six goals against the favored Knights Craig Patrick in goal for the IHSHL State
Tournament third place finish.

IHSHL Awards and Honors

Left: Team Captain Clayton Wiffen receives his 3rd place State Championship Trophy Right: Clayton is again honored as
First Team All-State Center. Seniors Mats Hanson and Brent Hartman are also selected as Honorable Mention All-State Selections.

Clayton Wiffen becomes only the second Metro player to lead the team in scoring for three consecutive seasons. A top five
scorer his freshman season, he lead the Metros the rest of the way; compiling  thirty-six goals and twenty-eight assists in just
thirty-four games his last two seasons. Never missing a game, he would average 1.8 points per game those two seasons. He
was a League top ten scorer his senior year as well as a All-Star Team and All-League Team selection.

Did You Know…Clayton joined the SYHA program as a Squirt and originally started as a goalie; after two season in net, he made
his move to offence and never looked back. With only four season of organized hockey under his belt, Clayton would go on to a
successful high school career. He would eventually play Junior and college hockey, and even play professionally in Europe

and Defenseman Dan Reynolds (#30) and Winger Wade Ridenour (#7)

Mike Bennett would log four seasons between the pipes for the Jr. Musketeers. He was the other half of a very solid
goaltending corps. He was a fast reflex goalie and his huge size allowed him to cover a lot of net. Mike was a team leader
on and off the ice and during his sophomore season he was an Alternate Captain and his senior season the Team Captain.

Did You Know…Mike’s son Kyle would play three seasons (02-05) as a Metro. In 2003 he would win the IHSHL
State Championship and in 2005 be selected to the IHSHL All-Star & All- League teams as well as play in the
Chicago Showcase.

Quarter-Final Game
3-Metros vs. Des Moines Valley Tigers –
2  OT/SO
March 6th, 1981
The quarter-finals draws the higher ranked and much favored Des Moines Valley. They finish a pair of game ahead of the Metros
finishing with eleven wins and only five losses. The game remains tied after regulation, on Metro goals by Billy Emerick and Brad
Hanson
, and after an eight minute overtime the game stays deadlocked. The game will now be decided by a sudden death shoot-off.
After an opening round goal by the Tigers, Clayton Wiffen responds beating the tigers goaltender and tieing the game. A nifty save
by Metros goalie Jamie Lempares and a red-lighter by Brent Hartman give the Metros a victory.

Semi-Final Game
0-Metros vs. Waterloo Columbus-3
March 7th, 1981
The Metros second day match-up is against the Waterloo Columbus Sailors. The parochial school entry from Waterloo is

heavily favored; having  lost just a single game all season and boasting some of the league’s best players. Despite taking six penalties
in the first period and mustering just a single shot on goal. Metros goaltender Craig Patrick stops every on of the Sailors attempts.
A second period disallowed Metros goal-means Columbus gets the period’s only goal.  The third period is a battle until with just
under three minutes remaining the Sailors find the net to take a two goal lead. An empty netter seals the deal for the eventual
State Champions.

Consolation Game
6-Metros vs. Des Moines Hoover/Roosevelt Knights-2
March 8th, 1981
The Metros will re-bound on Sunday as they match-up against the Des Moines Hoover/Roosevelt. The Knights boasted a

tournament upset beating the fourth seeded Urbandale Jays in the first round, but they too, would fall to the other superior team
from Waterloo in the semi-finals. However, this one’s not even close… Sioux City jumps out to a two goal lead after the first
period on red-lighters by Clayton Wiffen and Pat PinneyBrent Hartman, Mark Adam and Brad Hanson add goals
in the second and John Roost‘s tally in the third seals the deal for the Metros. Goaltender Jamie Lempares stops forty-one
Des Moines attempts for a very respectable third place State Tournament finish.

Junior Varsity Tournament
Again, It is Iowa State Hockey Coach Al Murdoch spearheading the creation of a junior varsity post season tournament. For the next
five seasons the junior varsity would compete in a post season invitational tournament. Traditionally held in Ames for three seasons
and a fourth in Des Moines before eventually returning to Ames for the first official IHSHL JV State Tournament.

The Dubuque Devils join the league making for ten teams. Each team plays each other twice for a total season of 18 games.

Waterloo Public & Columbus, Des Moines Hoover/Roosevelt, Valley, Dowling & Urbandale, Ames, Sioux City,
Mason City & Dubuque

A policy change at the Auditorium regarding local event tenants caused SYHA to explore new avenues for ice time. In the Summer
of ’81 an inflatable Bubble was purchased and would be the new hone of SYHA hockey events. It was relocated from Jackson,
Tennessee to Sioux Sioux City where it was constructed and completed before the start of the new season.

This SYHA hockey season would start at the Bubble. An air filled dome that was always 20 degrees colder than outside, it
was the only indoor building that often carried a wind-chill factor!!!  This would be the home of SYHA & the Metros for
only one season. A storm the following summer would destroy the bubble.

After a third place showing at the State Tournament last season, the Metros return with only three seniors and finish the season
with a dismal 2-14 record. In just sixteen regular season games, IHSHL Teams hang 116 goals on the Metros.

Metros Coaching Staff

        Jerry Thompson     Marcus Rotramel
Wayne Johnson
Head Coach                   Assistant Coach            Trainer/Equipment                        Team Rep

Returning for his third season is Head Coach Walt Johnson. After a pair of back to back third place finished at
the State Tournament-everyone knows this is a rebuilding year. Joining him this season as Assistant Coach is past
IHSHL and USHL goaltender Jerry Thompson. Originally from Des Moines, Jerry played for the Urbandale
Jays. After his senior season he would split a pair of seasons playing for the Musketeers and then the Buccaneers.
Marcus Rotrammel and Wayne Johnson are both back this season.

High Scorers
Mark Adam             Brad Hanson              Bob Batcheller            Jeff Kentner            Billy Emerick

Senior Mark Adam would lead the team in scoring this season with seven goals and eight assists. Junior Brad Hanson
found the net six times as well as adding another eighth assists. Bobby Batcheller leads the team in goals with ten red-lighters
and four assists. Senior Defenseman Jeff Kentner has recorded three goals and seven assists and Junior Billy Emerick rounds
out the top scorers with four goals and four assists. This are based on partial season information.

seasons that complete information is hard to find. Should you run into any information that helps complete some of
these stats please let us know

Between the Pipes
Craig Patrick
will return this season as the senior goalie and prepare to take on the starter duties. Junior Brett Kieler is also
experienced in net, forming this season goaltenders duo. Junior Scott Smith will also see action this season as again as there is
a limited interleague schedule. The Jr. Musketeers don’t fare so well this season and are severely outgunned by the remaining
eight teams in the league. The Metros hung a ton of goals on these two guys and conversely the offence could only muster
a pair of wins compared to 14 losses.

Craig Patrick                                                               Brett Kieler
Metros 1979-82                                                                              Metros 1980-83

Returning veteran Craig Patrick would garner most of the starts this season. Seeing time in ten IHSHL games, he was in net for
both of the Metros victories; an OT winner over Mason City Mohawks and a one goal difference senior day thriller against the
Urbandale Jays. Once in net, staying warm was the least of his problems; facing an average of 43 shots per game there was little
time for a breather. He did compile a respectable save percentage of .832 considering it was usually raining puck for 45 minutes.

Junior goaltender Brett Kieler took on the rotational duties, but faced a similar fate. Playing in six games, he faced an equally
daunting situation; facing 41 shots per game, their was minimal time to gather your thoughts before the next barrage of shots.
Brett also earned a respectable save percentage of .821 but in both these cases, the offence just gave up to many shots.

Jr. Musketeers/Metros 1979-82

Sandy (Inkster) Erich presents Senior Defenseman Jeff Kentner with SYHA’s Pete Inkster Award. Jeff was a four season
Jr. Musketeer/Metro player. One of three seniors on the team this season, and one of the Team Captains, Jeff provided some
much needed leadership and guidance to a team full of young players.

The Pete Inkster Award is a Defensive-Defenseman honor and is named for past Musketeer player and Jr. Musketeer
high school team head coach. Pete played for the Musketeers a pair of seasons (72-74).  After that, he joined the SYHA
coaching program in 1974 and the following season (75-76) he would coach the Jr. Musketeers to a second place finish
in the first ever Iowa State High School Hockey Tournament.

  Brad Hanson
Metros 1980-83

SYHA President Dave Maher presents (Junior) Metro player Brad Hanson the SYHA’s highest honor; the Ted Neby Award.

This Award named for SYHA founding father, Ted Neby was first awarded in1976 and is still an active SYHA Award. It is
presented annually by the Board of Directors to any SYHA player who exhibits outstanding leadership and community spirit
both on and off the ice.  A player who is willing to give his/her skills to the improvement of both our hockey program
and our community.

Brad Hanson was a long time SYHA player and a three season (80-83) Metro player. What he lacked for in size he made
up for in speed and scoring prowess. A two-time Metros High Scorer and senior season Team Captain, Brad led smallest-high
scoring line in the league. His junior season he would receive SYHA’s highest honor; the Ted Neby Award

deserved recognition as a team leader and mentor!!!

Mark Adam was one of the great team leaders his last few seasons as a Metro. He would log four seasons (78-82) as a Jr. Musketeers/
Metros player. His huge stature made him on the the big guys in the league and he played that way. Along the way, he became one of the
Metro’s great team leaders, working with the new players, smoothing over player disputes and making not only the games, but the
practices fun & enjoyable. As a leader he personified what a team captain should be and as a player, he was a master of the crease
and slot. This guy could work an opposing goalie to near death and redirect & tip in shots that most players couldn’t even see.

Quarter-Final Game
4-Metros vs. Ames Lil’ Cyclones-
3 OT
March 8th, 1982
Regular season basement dwellers Sioux City and Ames open the tournament with a chance to break into the winner’s bracket.
The Metros jump out to a two goal lead on tallies from Mick Emerick and Bobby Batcheller. However, Ames would add another
goal in the second and two in the third. However, with just two minutes remaining in the game Brad Hanson‘s unassisted goal would
give the Metros a new life as the end of regulation neared.  Brad Hanson would be the game’s hero when five minutes into the eight
minute overtime he takes a beautiful pass from Bobby Batcheller sending the Metros to the second round.

Semi-Final Game
1-Metros vs. Des Moines Capitols-
13
March 9th, 1982
The Metros second game sees a significant jump in the competition’s skill level. Meeting up with the regular season champs;
who
lost just one game all season and eventual State Tournament winners Waterloo Columbus. Sioux City is severely
out-gunned and out of gas; and the Sailors have their way with the Metros hanging thirteen goals on the regular season’s
last
place team. Jeff Kentner was the lone Metros bright spot, robbing the Sailors goalie of another shut-out.

Seventh Place Game
1-Metros vs. Mason City Mohawks-7
March 10th, 1982
It gets worse before it get better for the Metros. Meeting up with the Mason City Mohawks any hops of staying with the

regular season’s sixth best team are quickly dashed. The first period is close with the Mohawks jumping to a one goal lead,
however, in the second they find the net five times before the Metros could muster and type of response. Again, Brad
Hanson
would find the net on a Bobby Batcheller assist, but it was too little too late as the Metros go down in flames

for a second day in a row.

The Dubuque Devils join the IHSHL as the 10th team in the league. All teams will play an 18 game schedule with all teams
playing
each other at home and on the road.

The Metros have 14 players returning this season, all who have seen a significant amount of ice time. However, they finish
with a disappointing 7-11 regular season record. They would grab a sixth place finish at the ten team state tournament.

May and July of ’82 would deal a pair of devastating blows to the SYHA program. In May of that year, the Iowa DOT
discovered “cracks” in the steel structure of the newly erected Veteran Memorial Bridge and was closed to traffic for the
next two years. In June, a severe storm destroyed the Bubble, and left most of the other equipment in disarray, but still
in a salvageable condition. SYHA was in a dilemma with no building and no way to get there.

Enter Ted and Mary Jo Carlson and the Nebraska Inn Keepers Association. The Carlson would make arrangements
for the land to be secured as well as a new lager sized metal building be constructed on the same site. The Siouxland
Ice Arena Association would transfer all equipment and supplies to Siouxland Youth Hockey Association. The new
Marina Inn Convention Center”  was completed and ready for the start of the ’83 hockey season.

This season would mark the first season of a Sioux City High School Junior Varsity program. It would first be coached
by one of the original high school players Bobby Sutherland (Jr. Musketeers Class ’75).

Between the Pipes
This season has everyone hoping for better success in the win/loss column. With a returning senior in Brett Kieler and a Finish
foreign exchange student Juha Seipajarvi make for the seasons starting duo. Unfortunately its another down year for the
Metros and they can only put together 7 wins compared to 11 losses. With an official IHSHL Junior Varsity program now in
place Senior Scott Smith takes on the starting duties and becomes Sioux City’s first Junior Varsity goaltender.

Exchange Student Juha Seipajarvie joins the Metros for a single season. He would see time in eleven games this season
and finish with four wins and seven losses. He compiled a great .859 save percentage; giving up only 47 goals on 334 shots.
He would also receive one of three IHSHL Silver Glove Awards recording a league’s second best Save Percentage.

Brett Kieler would record seven starts this season, recording three wins and four losses. He shared a similar save percentage
as Juha; but his slightly lower .847 just kept him out of the running for the League’s Silver Glove distinction finishing
as the top five goaltender in the league. With opponents launching nearly 35 shots a game at the net he did manage
to save 36 of some 235 shots on goal.

Scott Smith

Goaltender Scott Smith squares up against this Des Moines Dowling shooter. Scott would play three seasons for
the Metros splitting time between the varsity and junior varsity. He would take on the starting duties for the newly

among the League’s top  five goaltenders.

 1-Metros vs. Des Moines Urbandale-3
November 20th, 1982
Sioux City falls to the Des Moines Urbandale Jays in this penalty filled game. The game would stay deadlocked through the first
period but the Jays would explode for three unanswered goals in the second. An early third period goal by Bobby Batcheller on
Steve Erps assist opened the door for a comeback but the Metros would stall-out and fall to 0-2 in the IHSHL.

10-Metros vs. Mason City Mohawks-2
January 22nd, 1983
Played in Waterloo at the McElroy Auditorium, this game was one for the night owl hockey fans. The puck dropped a little after
eleven PM and didn’t end until three hours later. The Metros get a much need win against the Mason City Mohawks improving
their record to 3-8. Billy Emerick, Brad Hanson and Chap Cuthbert would all score a pair of goals while Mick Emerick,
Bobby Batcheller, Rob Casper and Kirk Swanson would grab a goal each. Despite the slow start the Metros would finish
the season strong  winning five of their seven remaining games.

After playing four seasons for the Musketeers Barry Head would eventually return to Sioux City and become active
in the youth hockey program. In 1982 he would take over the Metros coaching duties for four seasons. Barry was a Musketeer
fan favorite and over the years collected 200 regular season points making him one of the top ten all time Musketeer scorers.
He was an Alternate Captain during the 75-76 season and then the following season (76-77) Team Captain. On November
first, 1975, Barry would score seven points against the Central Wisconsin Flyers to tie a Musketeers record.

Dave Legree would start his first outing as a Metros coach for three seasons (1982-85). He would then become active in the
SYHA program where he would eventually become in charge of the SYHA Coach/Player Development Programs. Along the way
Dave would coached Sioux City teams to numerous Midwest League and other tournament championships. He would again pick
up the high school coaching reins in 2014 when he became the Metros head coach for second time.

Did You Know…Dave played three total USHL seasons, the last two were as a Musketeer (77-79). His first season as a Musketeer
he would lead the team to a Southern Division Championship and be selected the Musketeer Most Valuable Player. The following
season he was awarded the USHL Most Valuable Player. Dave had a last season in the IHL playing for the Milwaukee Admirals
before returning to Sioux City and the SYHA/Metros program. In 1990 Dave was inducted into the Musketeer Hall of Fame

Still an unofficial IHSHL event, the Junior Varsity State Tournament was an invitational tournament featuring selected teams
and players. Participating teams  were composed of mainly JV players but each team was allowed a selected amount of
varsity players. Held in  Ames, IA the previous three seasons, the two prior time this event was held in the Hilton Coliseum;
this season’s  tournament is held in the new Ames Recreational Center.

This season would be the first season that the IHSHL would play an official JV regular season. However, the JV tournament
would remain an invitational for two more seasons before becoming an official IHSHL event.

For some reason, the junior varsity team wore this brown/orange/white colors scheme. Each jersey was sponsored by a different
area business. Teams were allowed to field only a pair of varsity players for this still experimental invitational tournament.
Bobby Batcheller and Brad Hanson were the selected as the Sioux City varsity participants.

Sioux City would finish the tournament with a pair of losses on Saturday against Des Moines & Waterloo Public and
a victory over Ames on Sunday. Bobby Batcheller would record three goals on Saturday, Benny Johnson a
pair of goals and Craig Stoever and Mike Sturgeon each grabbing a red-lighter.

Note the opposing Ames players wearing “Cooperalls” instead of the traditional hockey pants and socks. Manufactured by
the mainstream hockey equipment and stick manufacturer Cooper, these non traditional long paints incorporated full length
protection from the waist to the ankle. Popular in many hockey circles, mainly youth organizations this new style did makes
an impact on the hockey world during the early 80’s when NHL teams from Hartford and Philadelphia made them apart of
their standard uniform for a pair of seasons.

Because the material was very slippery the pants posed an increased injury potential to the players was the main reason for
the short life of this new equipment. However, most  contribute the reason for the short-lived fad it was just too big a change
to the traditional hockey uniform and was not accepted by the players and fans alike.

March 4th, 1983
Sioux City opens the tournament with some renewed vigor, having drastically improved upon last season’s terrible record;

eventual State Champions for two periods, on first period goals from Mick Emerick and Ted O’Brien and a second
period red-lighter by Chap Cuthbert that kept the game tied at three goals each. However, the powerhouse from
Waterloo was suddenly awakened; recording five goals on ten shots and advancing to the Championship game.

Quarter-Final Game
5-Metros vs. Dubuque Devils-2

March 2nd, 1984
The leagues’ two least efficient teams are set to do battle in this match-up to see who gets to take on the regular season champions.
The Metros would draw goals from Chap Cuthbert and a short handed goal from Ted O’Brien knotting the game at two goals each
at the end of the second period. Ted O’Brien would grab another shorty, giving the Metros the lead for good.  Additional goals
from Rob Casper and Mick Emerick and goaltender Mark Laurent‘s nineteen saves put the game out of reach of the Devils.

Semi-Final Game
3-Metros vs. Des Moines Public Black Knights-13
March 3rd, 1984
The Metros have nothing to loose in this game, clearly the underdog as they prepare to take on the league’s regular season
champions who lost just a single game all season. Mick Emerick‘s tally keeps the Metros close, and after the first period the
Metros are still in the game-down by just two goals. However, in the second Sioux City can’t find the net and after two more
Black Knight goals they are now facing a four goal deficit after two periods. Third period Metro goals by Dirk Richou
and Kirk Swanson are just score sheet foot notes as the Knight pour in eight third period goals.

Seventh Place Game
7-Metros vs. Des Moines Valley-Dowling Maroons-8 OT

March 4th, 1984
Back for a third day, the Metros prepare to rescue the weekend as they take on the Valley-Dowling Maroons. After a defensive
first period and a single goal from Metros Troy Levich, the first period would end tied at a goal each. In a total reverse of the first
period, Metros Doug RichouKirk SwansonTroy Levich and Mick Emerick all score goals in the second while Des Moines
retaliates with three of their own.
The Metros would add another goal in the third on a Mick Emerick red-lighter but the Maroons would record two quick
goals, tieing the game at six goals apiece. With just under two minutes remaining, Doug Richou would put the Metros ahead
with what one might think could be the game winning goal. However, but just forty-eight seconds later Des Moines would
battle back again as the game ends tied after three periods. Just over five and a half minutes into the extra period, the
Maroons would beat goaltender Chris Engle for the final victory.

Dubuque leaves the league. Des Moines Public and Urbandale merge but continue to be called the Urbandale J-Hawks.
The season starts off with seven teams playing a 12 game regular IHSHL season.

Ames,  Des Moines Public/Urbandale & Valley/Dowling , Mason City, Sioux City and Waterloo Public & Columbus.

In addition to that twelve games schedule each team played in a pre-season & Christmas jamborees in addition to the
State Tournament. The Metros would renew some of the old Omaha vs. Sioux City rivalries playing teams from the
Cornhusker state four times for a total of twenty-six games that season.

This season the Junior Varsity post season Tournament becomes an official IHSHL event following the same
format as the  traditional varsity tournament.

This marks the first season that an All-Star Game is played. It is held in the North Iowa Recreational Center in Mason City, IA.

The USHL requires each IHSHL team to roster a “Taxi Squad”. Metros Rob Casper, Bill Swartzel, Mark Schmith, Mick

Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) Tournament Championship
March 1st-3rd / Hickman Arena Des Moines, IA
In what is the most unusual IHSHL State Tournament ever; it is determined that the team finishing in fifth place during
the regular season will have to play and additional qualifying game. Also, a final four format is used this season, after all
teams complete their scheduled games on Friday and Saturday. Should it work out, that selected team could eventually play
over six games should they make it to the finals. There was even a ten minute mini game to break the tie for the remaining
final four position. That lucky fifth place team was….the Sioux City Metros.

 Game 1
6
-Metros vs. Ames Lil’ Cyclones-9

March 1st, 1985
The Metros find themselves opening the tournament facing the regular season champions from Ames. The Metros manage to stay
close and after a second Mick Emerick goal midway through the second period pulled them to within one goal. However, the Metros
would break-down as the final two minutes of the second period ticked away; giving up three goals to the Lil’ Cyclones. A single
goal by Kirk Swanson in the third wouldn’t be enough to get the Metros back in the game and they open with a disappointing loss.

 Game 2
4
-Metros vs. Des Moines Urbandale Jays-6

March 1st, 1985
Later that afternoon the Metros prepare to take-on Des Moines Urbandale. The Metros would see Mick Emerick,
Brian Burke, Kirk Swanson
and Mark Schmith all light the lamp but it wasn’t enough to outlast the Jays who found
the net six times on  forty-three shots on goal compared to Sioux City’s twenty-four attempts.

 Game 3
3
-Metros vs. Waterloo Public Warriors-8

March 2nd, 1985
Saturday’s opposition doesn’t get any easier, nor does the day get shorter for the Metros. Staring the day out against
one of the league’s best teams, the Metros face some must win situations. The Metros would get goals from Brain Burke,
Mark Laurent and Rob Casper with the Metros holding a two goal lead on the favorites. However, halfway through
the second, disaster struck and the Warriors exploded for five goals-three of them coming just twenty-seven seconds apart.

 Game 4
4
-Metros vs. Waterloo Columbus Sailors-3

March 2nd, 1985
Saturday’s second offering is the other team from Waterloo. Usually a league championship contender, the Sailors have a down
season and offer up a perfect chance for the Metros to get back in the final four hunt. Brad Kieler, Hannus Koivu and
Mike Scott all recorded goals and goaltender Scott Patrick stopped forty-one Columbus attempts. However, the game
stayed deadlocked until with just under four minutes remaining Mick Emerick sealed the deal for the Metros.

 Game 5
Mini-game
1
-Metros vs. Mason City Mohawks-0

March 2nd, 1985
Despite their losses, the Metros still have a chance to advance to the final four when they end up tied with Mason City. A ten Minute mini-game
will serve as the tie breaker. Sioux City beats the Mohawks and advances to the tournament’s final four when Rob Casper scores the Metros
game winner on an assist from Mick Emerick. Goaltender Scott Patrick, playing his fifth game in two days stops all six Mohawk attempts.

Semi-Final Game
1-Metros vs. Waterloo Public-8

March 2nd, 1985
The Metros and Warriors meet again for the second time in two days as they hope to foil one of the best teams in the League.
The Metros keep the game close on a goal from Mick Emerick keeping them within one of the Warriors. However, after that it’s
all Waterloo as they add three goals in the second and three more in the third as the Metros fall to the eventual State Champions.

Consolation Game
3-Metros vs. Urbandale J-Hawks-6

March 3rd, 1985
For the second game in a row, the Metros end the first period trailing two-one on a red-lighter by Troy Levich and twenty saves
from goaltender Scott PatrickKirk Swanson ties the game momentarily but four minutes later the Jays add one of their three tallies
before the period ends. The Metros put twenty-one shots on goal but come away with just the one.  The teams trade goals in the
third but Mark Schmith‘s third period goal isn’t enough for the Metros and they fall to the Jays and a fourth place tournament finish.

This season marks the first time that the Junior Varsity Tournament becomes an official IHSHL event. It follows the similar formant
each season as the Varsity Tournament. Prior to this season the event was an end of the season invitational tournament.

March 1st, 1986
The Metros are next  paired-up with the Waterloo Columbus Sailors. Usually one of the top teams in the league the Columbus program
has experienced some lean seasons and this one found the Sailors finishing the regular season with just two victories. Looking to get
in the win column, the Metros grab first period goals from Mike Swartzel and Rob Casper, but the Sailors battle back each time with
goals in the first and second periods. However, it’s all Sioux City in the third; Duane Erickson would get the game winner with just

younger goalies. Again, senior Scott Patrick and now junior Jeremy Lund take on the varsity net minding duties. Together they
will post a 13-4-1 record  placing them below the regular season champs. This duo would lead the Metros to their first championship
game in ten seasons but fall short of a win, this time. Upcoming goalie Jeff Brogan would play a full junior varsity schedule.

Scott Patrick  allows the second fewest goals this season surrendering just forty-seven red-lighters this season.

1987-88 Burt, Sarah, Bob & Mark Post

Taken during the 1987-88 Metros season at the Sioux City Auditorium. This is Mark’s Senior season and Burt’s sophomore season.
The Mark would finish this season as the IHSHL State Champion runner-up, Burt would be the runner-up again two seasons later.

Bob and Sarah were huge supporters of SYHA and both very instrumental in the successful start of SYHA. They would
both be eventual board members, serve in various officer positions and provide some tremendous foresight into our
eventual successful youth hockey program. Bob’s leadership in coaching development, selection and placement would
start to reap the benefits this season, as the Sioux City Metros would spend the next 15 seasons as one of the IHSHL’s
most dominate and successful High School teams!!!

Meeting up with the always competitive Waterloo Warriors this one looks to be a better game on paper. Finishing just a win
behind the Metros both teams are very evenly matched. However, it’s Sioux City with the jump in their step as they score
three first period goals from Chris SwansonMark Graber and Brett Austin. Waterloo battles back in the second period

Sioux City would enter the tournament as the fourth seeded team posting a record of eleven wins and nine losses. They are

6-Metros vs. Mason City Mohawks-4

March 3rd, 1989
The Metros match-up with  Mason City. Both teams posted eleven wins but the Mohawks would finish a point ahead
of the Metros. The game started out in a flurry with both teams grabbing a pair of goals each. Metros Ross VanRooyan
and Bert Post would  strike first but the Mohawks would keep the game even after the first. However an explosive
second period saw the Metros get red-lighters from Burke Lake, T.J. Reinsch, Damon Keith and Brett Austin.
Mason City would mount a comeback, recording two goals in the third, but never really posing a serious threat in
this opening round game.

Saturday’s game offers another chance for the Metros to ruin the Tigers perfect season. However, Des Moines gets
the jump on  the Metros scoring three goals in the first nine minutes of the game before T.J. Reinsch can get the
Metros on the board. The second period would settle down with Des Moines scoring the only goal. Sioux City would
start a comeback on a second T.J Reinsch goal but Des Moines would counter with one of their own. A Chris Sorum
goal would start another possible rally, but fizzles as time runs out.

The Metros next foe are the evenly matched Waterloo Columbus Sailors who also ended the season with eleven wins. The

by the National Federation of State High School Associations. The new affiliation with USA Hockey allows the League to
participate in the Chicago Showcase for the first time.

Another trip to the State Tournament Championship game and another second place finish. On paper, this team should have won!!!
However, they would return with almost the identical team the following season with different results.

The 90’s would begin a run of Sioux City’s dominance in the IHSHL/MHSHL hockey leagues.
Starting in ’88 & ’90 with Championship runner-up trophies. The Metros return in both 1991 & 1992 with Championship
wins. After a runner-up finish in ’93, they again would win Champion status in ’94. The Metros would go on to win two
more championships in ’98 & ’99 and close-out the decade with a runner-up finish in 2000. They would again win the
Championship in 2003.

The 1990’s made for a Sioux City Championship streak that is by far tops in the IHSHL & MHSHL leagues. During
those eleven seasons the Metros captured two Regular Season Championships and appeared in the State Championship
game eight times, winning the title five times.

Iowa
High School Hockey League (IHSHL) Tournament Championship

March 1st-4th / McElroy Auditorium Waterloo, IA

considered tournament favorites.

Quarter-Final Game
9-Metros vs. Dubuque Devils-
1
March 1st, 1990
In a rare Thursday night match the Metros get the tournament underway and look for another chance in the championship
game. They will be taking on the Dubuque Devils who finished third in the east and sixth place overall. This one is going to be
all Metros as they score seven goals in the first period. Before the first fifteen minutes were over Metros T.J. Reinsch had
grabbed two goals and Landon Blatchford, Brett Austin,  Jade Pospeshil, Chad Markham and Tracy Brunken
all had red-lighters to their credit. Sioux City would take the their foot off the gas with Brett Austin getting a second goal

Semi-Final Game
4-Metros vs. DM Valley-Dowling-

The Metros find themselves squared-up against the west division champions and second best team in the league. Des Moines
Valley-Dowling is the favorite on paper but Sioux City’s momentum from the first game could make this one exciting. Both
teams trade goals in the first period with Dale Frerichs and Chris Sorum keeping the game ties at two. For a second period
the teams exchange goals and its Chris Sorum again finding the back of the net. The game remains a struggle until
Jesse Monell  beats the Des Moines goaltender fiving the Metros the lead. Sioux City’s defense corps and
goaltender Jeff Brogan fend off the Maroons final period assault and advance to the Championship game.

Championship Game
1-Metros vs. Waterloo Public-3

March 4th, 1990
The Metros return to the championship game for the second time in three seasons. They prepare to take on Waterloo
Public, who earlier in the tournament had upset the regular season champions Waterloo Columbus. The game is all that is
expected with the Metros and Warriors trading goals in the first on a Landon Blatchford tally and both goalies were perfect
during the second. However, a penalty shot goal would put the Warriors ahead and eventually another tally would put the game
out of reach for the Metros. Sioux City would pepper the Waterloo goalie with forty-five shots, foiling his just one time.
