This is the Start of the Third decade (1990-2000) of Sioux City Jr. Musketeers/Metros High School Hockey
The St. Joe Griffons and Omaha Gladiators join the league in the west. Waterloo Public and Columbus merge. Urbandale moves to the east.
Ten teams play a 26 game schedule in two divisions.
East Division: Ames, Dubuque, Mason City, Waterloo & Des Moines Urbandale
West Division: Sioux City, Omaha Lancers & Gladiators, St. Joe, & Des Moines Valley/Dowling.
The Metros own the west with a 21-4-1 record and finish just two points behind league winning Mason City. As the 90’s start out,
Sioux City sets the pace with offensive numbers never seen before in the IHSHL.
T.J. Reinsch leads the way with 70 points and Chris Sorum goal behind. Three other Metros record over fifty points and
six more over twenty-seven points.They place five players on the All-Star Team, four on the All-Stare team and four in the
Chicago Showcase. Goaltender Jeff Brogan receives the State Championship Most Valuable Player Award.

With the start of this season is the start of a high school dynasty. Over the course of the next ten seasons
the Metros will go to the finals seven times and win five of them. Steering the ship is Head Coach Dave Davies,
he is back for his third season, having lead the Metros to the championship game last season. Joining the coaching
staff are Assistant Coaches Dave Legree and Scott Patrick. Dave is both a former Musketeer player and Metros
Head Coach and Scott a past Metros stand-out goaltender and Tournament MVP. Dick Augustine is back for his
third of nine total seasons as the Metros Team Rep.
High Scorers

T.J. Reinsch leads the way in scoring with a whopping seventy points, recording thirty-seven goals and thirty-three
assists, a Metros scoring record that still stands to this day. Chris Sorum is just a goal behind with thirty-six red lighters
and thirty-three assists. Daniel Davies records thirty-two goals on his way to fifty-five points. Jesse Monell spends
the season as play-maker setting up thirty-three Metro goals in addition sixteen of his own. Brian Augustine records
eighteen goals for thirty-four regular season points.
Heavy Hitters
Tracy Brunken Jesse Monell Cory Roberts T.J. Reinsch Matt Lester
No Stranger to the heavy hitter list, Tracy Brunken, he brings his A-game and racks-up ninty-four penalty minutes
this season. This is an eventual Metros record that stands for ten seasons. In second place is Jesse Monell, fourth in team
scoring despite his eighty-four minutes in the box. Cory Roberts has fifty-two minutes and metros leading scorer
T.J. Reinsch records fifty-four minutes. Matt Lester rounds out the top fine with thirty-two penalty minutes.
Between the Pipes
With multi seasons of regular season and tournament experience Jeff Brogan and Jesse Basarich are far and away the
league’s best goaltending duo. Both goalies post winning records of 10-2-1 and 10-2 to lead the Metros a west division
championship and a win short of the league champions from Dubuque. Sioux City has another young goalie waiting for his
shot at championship success in eighth grader Chad Stewart will be called into action in a victorious varsity games
and play a full junior varsity schedule.

Metros 1987-91 Metros 1989-92
The Metros would again see action in the championship tilt and this time they would not disappoint; bringing home
Sioux City’s first ever IHSHL Championship. Jeff Brogan would be honored as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player
and Jesse Basarich would receive one of three of the league’s Silver Glove Awards with a .902 save percentage. They
would post a combined save percentage of .890 and both record a pair of shut-outs during the championship season. This
duo would lead the Metros to second place finish during the regular season losing just four times.
Goaltender Jeff Brogan is selected the Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) State toutnement Most Valuable Player (MVP)
He would help lead the Metros to a second place regular season finish and to the Metros first Tournament Championship.
Jeff Brogan becomes just the second Sioux City Metros goaltender to receive the post-season Tournament’s Most Valuable
Player award. (Scott Patrick would receive this Tournament award in 1987)
Jeff would lead the Metros to their first Tournament Championship in a desisive win over the regular season champions from Dubuque.

Heelan High School
This photo is taken of the five Metros players representing Bishop Heelan High School this 90-91 season. Sophomore Daniel Davies,
seniors Jason Osbar, T. J. Reinsch & Brian Augustine and junior Jade Pospeshil. All five of these players would be apart of
the ’91 IHSHL championship team. Daniel & Jade will go on to win a second in a row IHSHL Championship next season.
T.J. Reinsch
Metros 1987-91
T.J. Reinsch would log four season with the Metros. Joining the team as a freshman he would make unsuccessful
runs at the post season championship finishing in second place in ’88 & ’90. However, his senior season he would get a
rare third chance and this time it proved successful as the Metros would win their first post season championship.
T.J. was a IHSHL two time selection to the All-Star, IHSHL All-League and Chicago Showcase teams as well as
two-time Metros leading scorer and the league’s second highest scorer.
T.J. Reinsch becomes the Jr. Musketeers/Metros all-time leading scorer. Recording thirty-seven goals and thirty-three assists this single
season his thirty-seven goals and seventy points during the twenty-six game regular season remains a record for nearly thirty-plus
seasons. His seventy poinys in a single season remains a Metros record. His 1.42 goals per game and his 2.7 points per games
remain the second highest among all Jr. Musketeers/Metros scorers.
The Metros place four players among the IHSHL’s top ten regular season scorers. T.J. Reinsch and Chris Sorum are second and
third woth seventy and sixty-nine points. Daniel Davies is seventh and Jesse Monell eighth with fifty-five and fifty-two. Together
they records 246 regular season points.
The Metros set a IHSHL Single Game Scoring Record this season recording twenty-three (23) goals against the Omaha Jr. Lancers
Sioux City also posted forty-nine other goals in the three other match-ups with the Lancers winning 17-1, 16-1 and 16-3
Beginning a Decade of Dominance…
The 1990-91 marks Sioux City’s first ever post-season high school hockey championship. In a disappointing loss in the
championship game the prior season, the Metros return with an unfinished business attitude destroying the regular season
champions in an 8-1 victory over the Dubuque Devils. This win sets the table for three more championship victories in
the next four seasons.

Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) Tournament Championship
February 28th-March 3rd / Cyclone Community Center Ames, IA
Finishing the season with twenty-one wins and just four losses & a tie the Metros are the west division champions.
They place four players; T.J Reinsch, Chris Sorum, Dan Davies and Jesse Monell among the leagues top ten scorers.
Despite Dubuque’s better record, the Metros enter the state meet as the tournament favorites and are looking to take
care of some unfinished business-last season’s championship game defeat.
Quarter-Final Game
5-Metros vs. Mason City Mohawks-0
March 1st, 1991
The Metros start the day as the last of five scheduled games. They are paired against Mason City, who won the pig-tail game
earlier that day defeating the Omaha Jr. Lancers. The Mohawks, who could muster just eight victories all season, are no match
for the Metros. T.J Reinsch grabs the game winner and Chris Sorum gives the Metros a first period lead. In the second
Chris Sorum gets a second tally of the night and Jesse Monell puts the Metros ahead by four. A single red-lighter in the
third by Landon Blatchford ices the game for the Metros. Goaltender Jesse Basarich repels all twenty-six
attempts by the Mohawks.
Semi-Final Game
8-Metros vs. DM Valley-Dowling Tigers-3
March 2nd, 1991
The semi-final contest finds the Metros taking on Des Moines Valley-Dowling; having finished the season behind the
Metros as the division’s second best team with nineteen wins during the season. The game looks to be a meeting between
two of the league’s best teams and from the start it does not disappoint. Both Des Moines opened the period with the first
two goals but Sioux City storms back to even the game on goals by Dan Davies, Brian Augustine and Tracy Brunken.
Having just one period in the tank, the Tigers are spent as they give up four unanswered goals to the Metros. Dan Davies
would grab| his second of the night and Jesse Monell, Chris Sorum and T.J. Reinsch giving them a commanding lead.
Sioux City would let-up in the third and Chris Sorum would record the period’s only goal. Jeff Brogan is perfect in
the latter two periods stopping all eighteen shots on goal.
Championship Game
8-Metros vs. Dubuque Devils-1
March 3rd, 1991
Fresh off a semi-final game that on-paper could have gone either way, the Metros enter the championship looking for their
first ever State title. Dubuque ends the regular season a the league’s best team but does so just a pair of points ahead of
the Metros. Its the Devils who strike first and grabbing the lead after the first period. Sioux City would retaliate in the
second with three more unanswered goals; two by Jesse Monell and one by Dan Davies. The Metros have the
momentum but the game is still in jeopardy with one more period to play.
No one could see the results of the final period coming…Sioux City score five goals; Dan Davies gets two more for
his third goal of the game, T.J. Reinsch grabs a pair of tallies and Chris Sorum gets the games final red-lighter.
Goaltender Jeff Brogan stops all but one of the Devils tries and the Metros outshoot their opponents 21-4 to capture
their first State Tournament Title since the IHSHL was formed fifteen seasons ago. Metros goaltender Jeff Brogan
is selected as the tournaments Most Valuable Player.
Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) Junior Varsity Tournament Championship
March 8th-9th / Sioux City Auditorium Sioux City, IA
The Metros enter the tournament both as the host team and the seventh place seed mustering just five wins all season.
Unfortunately, before the weekend is over they would match-up with both the league’s two best teams in the Omaha Gladiators
and Jr. Lancers as well as the higher seeded team from Missouri. Icing an offence that couldn’t get going the Metros surrendered
nineteen goals to their opposition and could only light the lamp themselves five times.

IHSHL would open this season again as a nine teams in two divisions . The West Division plays a 24 game schedule and
the East Division a 22 game schedule.
However, there are some new faces in the league; the Omaha Lancers and the St. Joe Griffons.

The Metros win the regular season with a 19-5 record. Offence is the theme again, Jesse Monell and Daniel Davies both score over
sixty points and Jesper Kilander over fifty. The Metros place five players in the All-Star Game, three All-State selections and four players
in the Chicago Showcase. Daniel Davies is chosen the IHSHL Tournament Most Valuable Player.
The Metros would win the regular season championship as well as a second in a row IHSHL State Tournament
Championship on home ice.
They are the third IHSHL team (Des Moines & Waterloo) to win back to back championships.

Head Coach Dave Davies is back for a fourth season and ready to defend the Metros last season Championship.
Assistant Coach Scott Patrick is back for a second season as well. newcomer Sheila Yingst joins the administrative
staff as the Team Manager and Dick Augustine is back for his fourth season as the Metros Team Rep.
High Scorers

Offence is the theme, as the Metrosrecord 146 goals in just twenty-four regular season games. Daniel Davies leads
the way with sixty-three points; twenty-eight goals and a team leading thirty-five assists. Despite missing three games,
Jesse Monell still lands in third place with a team high of thirty-one goals, nine of which are short-handed, for sixty-one
points. Exchange student Jesper Kilander would record twenty-eight goals and twenty-four assists. Jade Pospeshil and
another exchange student Karri Poykio would complete the top five scorers list both recording twenty-eight points.
Daniel Davies, Jesse Monell and Jesper Kilander, were also the IHSHL’s second, third and fourth highest scorers. The
high-scoring tandem would notch 146 total points in just twenty-four games.
Heavy Hitters

Second leading scorer Jesse Monell would also lead the Metros in penalties with sixty-six. Corey Roberts was a
couple of minors behind him with sixty-three minutes. T.J. Juon and Karri Poykio would both record fifty minutes
in the box and leading scorer Daniel Davies would earn thirty-eight penalty minutes.
91-92 Between the Pipes
Goaltender experience is becoming an expected commodity as the Metros prepare to defend their IHSHL championship.
Jesse Basarich returns with three seasons experience and a league championship under his belt. Jesse will shoulder the load this
season turning in a 17-5 record. However freshmen Chad Stewart and Matt Seawalson will also contribute a pair of wins for an
overall 19-5 record giving the Metros their first ever regular season championship. Jesse and crew would finish the season on
home ice; winning their second in a row IHSHL championship
Jesse Basarich
Metros 1989-92
Senior Jesse Basarich draws the starting position this season. Playing a majority of the games, he posts seventeen
wins and just five losses this season. He earned four shut-outs and facing 429 shots on goal, Jesse turned aside
.879 percent of them. He backstops the Metros to their first ever Regular Season Championship and their second
in a row IHSHL Tournament Championship. The two-time State Champion is an IHSHL Silver Glove Award
recipient and would be selected to play in both the IHSHL All-Star Game and the Chicago Showcase.

Chad Stewart sees time in three varsity contests; grabbing a pair of victories and youngster Matt Seawalson sees time in one
varsity game. Chad’s two wins help the Metros secure their first ever regular season championship, a first seed in the
tournament and an eventual repeat tournament championship
Did You Know…This season’s Metros scored an averaged of six goals per game on their opponents while allowing their foes just
three per game.
Dan Davies is selected as the Sioux City Journal’s Metro Athlete of the Year. Lettering in hockey as well as football and soccer.
This makes Dan the first ever Jr. Musketeer/Metro player to receive this top honor among the Siouxland areas’ eligible athletes.
4-Metros vs. Des Moines Valley/Dowling-3

Metros 1989-93
Dan Davies has a busy day in this meeting with the Valley/Dowling Tigers. In addition to a couple of minor penalties, his goal
a minute into the third period would give the Metros a seemingly comfortable three goal lead. He would also grab two assists
on a second period goal by Jesper Kilander and the eventual game winner; another one from Kilander with just over three
minute remaining in the game.
Dan was a two time Metros leading scorer during his junior and senior seasons. Shown here during his junior season, he would
record twenty-eight goals and thirty-five assists. His sixty-three points points puts him among the Jr. Musketeers/Metros top ten
all-time scorers and his nearly 1.5 assists per game and over 2.5 points per game are both the third highest among all
Sioux City scorers.
Sioux City would build a three goals lead over the Tigers until a third period comeback put the game in jeopardy. Three quick
goals by the Tigers would tie the game with just minute remaining however a second goal of the game by exchange student Jesper
Kilander would give the Metros another victory.
Goaltender Jess Basarich would stop twenty-six of thirty shots on goal including the first twenty-two Tiger attempts. A brief
flurry of goals would allow the Tiger to tie the game but Jesse would regain his composure, stopping the remaining four shots
before a Kilander goal ended the game for the Tigers.

Jesse Monell
Metros 1989-92
Jesse Monell two prior seasons saw him record a dozen goals & dozen assists as a freshman. His sophomore season saw him
finish among the Metros top four scorers with fifty-two total points; averaging two points per game. This season, it was more
of the same. Jesse would record 31 goals, including five power play and nine short-handed goals & thirty assists, in just
twenty-one regular season games; his 61 points was second best among Metro scorers and third best among all League
players this season.
Jesse Monell finishes the season recording thirty-one goals and thirty assists. His 61 points was second best among Metro scorers
and third best among all League players this season. Having played in just twenty-one games this season, his nearly
1.5 Goals Per Game and 3 Points Per Game are Jr. Musketeers/Metros scoring records.

Last season’s champions are fresh off a regular season that saw them top all other teams with nineteen wins. The Metros
enter the tournament as the number one seed team and look to be the meet’s favorite team. Four Metros are among the
League’s top five scorers and the boast the best goaltender in the league. Sioux City looks to do what only two other
IHSHL teams have done thus far, and that’s win a pair of consecutive State Championships.
They have a rare opportunity to do so on home ice.

6-Metros vs. Waterloo Warriors-2
February 28th, 1992
Sioux City first obstacle are the Waterloo Warriors. Having only mustered five wins all season, Waterloo teams historically
prove tough to beat in must win situations. The first period was back and forth with Sioux City striking first on a Corey Roberts
goal and later Jesse Monell would tie the period at two each. However, the regular season champs are just too much for the
Warriors and second period goals from Dan Davies and another one from Corey Roberts puts the Metros ahead for good.
Eric Ruble would grab two more in the third. Sioux City peppered the Warriors goaltender with fifty-one shots
and Jesse Basarich stopped a dozen attempts.
Semi-Final Game
4-Metros vs. Ames Lil’ Cyclones-3 OT
February 29th, 1992
The Metros get the regular season fifth place team from Ames; one of just five team this season to record eleven or more
victories. However, The Lil’ Cyclones are riding high having just up-set heavily favored Valley-Dowling in a double overtime
match. Ames would shut-down the Metros in the first and hold them to a single Corey Roberts goal in the second; that still
left the Metros trailing by one. Ames would grab another tally early in the third and appear to be pulling away from
the tournament favorites.
As time ticked away, it looked like another up-set was afoot. Sioux City would apply continued pressure in the third, firing
fourteen shots on the Ames goaltender and limiting them to just eight attempts. However, they lacked that elusive momentum
changing goal they needed so badly. However, with just over two minutes remaining, Dan Davies would give the Metros
the spark they needed and eighteen seconds later Landon Blatchford would send the game to overtime.
Just over seven minutes into the extra period, Eric Ruble would provide the game winner, sending the Metros to the
championship game. Jesse Basarich stopped twenty-two shots on goal.
Championship Game
5-Metros vs. Mason City Mohawks-2
March 10th, 1992
The weight is heavy on the Metros; last season defending champions and this season’s regular season winners have a chance
to do what only two other IHSHL teams have done before and they have a chance to do it in front of over a thousand home
town supporters.
The game is close for much of the period, however with just over nine minutes gone Metros Karri Poykio would get the
Metros on the board first and with just a minute remaining Corey Roberts would put the defending champs up by two. Ames
would battle back in the second scoring a tally in between the Metros to goals by Eric Ruble and T.J. Juon. The teams would
trade goals on the third but that second goal of the night by T.J. Juon ices the game and a repeat champions for the Metros.

The Metros slip a bit this season and finish fourth in the west with a 14-10 record. Daniel Davies would lead the scoring with
forty-two points while five other Metros scored twenty-five plus points. They would place three players in the All-Star Game
and four on the All-State Team and in the Chicago Showcase.
By the time the championship game rolled around there wasn’t a person in the house that didn’t think the Metros wouldn’t
win their third back-to-back-toback championship.
Also notable is the transition of coaches, after this season Dave Davies would step down as head coach. Assistant Coach and
another former Musketeer Jimmy Peck will take the reins next season. His similar coaching philosophy would insure the
continued dominance of the IHSHL and Sioux City Metros hockey.
Sioux City Hosts the IHSHL Junior Varsity (JV) State Tournament.

Dave Davies enters his fourth season as Metros Head Coach. Just three seasons in and Dave has already captured a
pair of state titles and a state runner-up honor as well as a regular season championship. With another strong Metro team
they look to be both regular season and state championship contenders, eventually making another trip to the final game
this season.
Jimmy Peck, another past Billikan and Musketeer player, joins the Metros coaching staff this season. He would take
on the Assistant Coach duties in preparation for his next four seasons as head coach, securing another state championship
and a third place finish. Also born in Canada, Jimmy played his Junior hockey there before a scholarship brought him to
Missouri. After four seasons at St. Louis University, Jimmy Peck would log four more season with the Musketeers
securing countless scoring and defenseman awards. He remains an All-Time top five Musketeers for total assists and
total points and is second highest among defenseman in goals and leader among defenseman
in assists and points.
Rounding out the Metros coaching staff is Robbie Dirks. A long time SYHA coach from Mites to Bantams this
will be his first season at the helm of the junior varsity team. Veteran Team Rep Dick Augistine is also back
for anothe rseason.

For the second season in a row, Daniel Davies leads the team in scoring forty-two points with a team leading twenty-two assists.
He is also the eighth highest scorer in the League. Eric Rubel posts sixteen goals and twenty-one assists. Exchange students
Daniel Thonstad would record a team high twenty-two goals totaling thirty-five points and Kimmo Kukkonen seventeen goals
for twenty-seven regular season points. Landon Blatchford would finish the season with eight goals and seventeen assists

92-93 Between the Pipes
A transplant player from out of state and a senior, Ben Hudson would join the existing sophomore goalies Chad Stewart,
Matt Seawalson and newcomer Mark Bukovich between the pipes this season. Mark and Matt would split time in the varsity
net finishing with 8-2 and 6-7 record. Their overall 14-10 record was still good for a tie for the third place in league. Chad and
Mark would take on the junior varsity duties finishing for a 16-6-2 third place regular season finish. Chad would a 7-1-1 record
and Mark a 9-5-1. Mark would also receive one of the League’s three Silver Glove Awards for the third best save percentage
in the league

Daniel Davies would be the first Metro player to be selected three times to represent Team Midwest in the prestigious Chicago
Showcase tournament. Held Annually, this nation-wide tournament features the best high school players from across the country.
Dan was also a three-time selection to the IHSHL All-Star and and All-League teams.

Dave Davies took over the Metros program in 1988 and with the exception of that first season, guided the Metros to State
Tournament championships showings four times in a row, having success winning back-to-back championships in 1991 and
1992. Shown here in Mason City during the final game vs. Des Moines Valley-Dowling. The Metros would fall this time
around but would return next season claiming their third League Championship in four seasons.
Also pictured here is assistant coach Jimmy Peck. He would take the helm next season bringing home another Metros Championship.
After coaching four seasons he would return behind the bench in 2001 for six more seasons capturing another championship in 2003.

Sioux City finished the season in the middle of the pack overall, putting together fourteen wins during the twenty-four game regular
season they are tied for third in the west division and fifth overall. The Metros have a challenge ahead of them defending their prior
two seasons championships. The Omaha Gladiators were the regular season champs with eighteen wins and Des Moines
just behind them with seventeen.

4-Metros vs. Ames Lil’ Cyclones-3 OT
March 5th, 1993
Sioux City opens taking on the East divisions best team, albeit with two fewer wins than the Metros. Daniel Thonstad would get
the Metros on the board first with the period’s only tally. However, Ames would retaliate with a pair of goals in the second giving
them back the lead after two. The Metros exchange students would get the lead back when Daniel Thonstad would grab his
second of the night, tieing the game and Kimmo Kukkonen would put the Metros ahead before the periods first six minutes
had passed. With lots of time remaining the Lil’ Cyclones were able to fide the equalizer and sent the game to overtime. Half
way into the extra period Taylor Schramm wound take a great pass from Thonstad giving the Metros a first round victory.
Semi-Final Game
5-Metros vs. Omaha Gladiators-2
March 6th, 1993
In an eventual and expected match-up, the Metros chances for a third consecutive State title will go through the league’s best
regular season team, the Omaha Gladiators. However, its the Metros who strike first, doing so three times in the opening
period. Daniel Thonstad, Daniel Davies and Landon Blatchford put the Metros ahead. The Gladiators could only muster
four shots on goals, however, one of them did beat the Sioux city goaltender. The teams would trade goals in the second on a
Mike Stoneburg red-lighter further extending the lead. After a scoreless first tem minutes, Mike Stoneburg would find the
net for a second time tonight putting the game out of reach for the top seeded Gladiators. Goaltender Matt Seawalson would
fall back into his pre-injury groove, stopping all but two of the eighteen attempts in the final two periods.
Championship Game
4-Metros vs. DM Valley-Dowling-8
March 7th, 1993
The Metros quest for a third title would not get much easier, as the face the Des Moines Tigers; the league’s second best team
and just a single win less than the Gladiators. The Tigers would launch eight, first period shots and capitalize on two of them.
The defense was able to limit the Metros to just three chances however, one of those shots from Dan Davies did find the
back of the net and getting the Metros back in the game.
|Des Moines would strike twice in the second before Dan Davies second goal of the game closed the lead. Des Moines would
sore again but Sioux City would not go away when Kimmo Kukkonen again brought the Metros within one goal.
However, the Metros begin to run out of gas; surrendering three unanswered goals in the third before Landon Blatchford
tallied a too little too late goal with just second remaining.

The Metros are back to their old selves with a league winning 18-6 record. Exchange students Sami Heino and
Mikael Sundelin lead the way in scoring both with fifty-one points and five other players finish with twenty-three plus
points. They place four players in the All-Star Game, seven on the All-State Team and three in the Chicago Showcase.
After securing another Regular Season Championship, it was back to another state championship final game as the Metros
took on the Omaha Jr. Lancers. The Metros would win, and bring home their third championship in four seasons.
Metros Sami Heino and Mikael Sundelin are selected as the IHSHL Tournament’s CO-Most Valuable Players.
This would mark Sioux City’s third State Championship in four seasons.

Jim Peck joins the Metros for the first of several coaching stints with the Metros. The prior season as assistant coach would
help lead the Metros to the championship game. This season would also prove successful winning the first of two eventual
State Titles. Joining him as Assistant Coaches is past Musketeers Jeff Gray, he was a member of the Musketeers first ever
regular season & Clark Cup championship teams. Past Musketeer player and three-time Metros leading scorer
Clayton Wiffen and two-time Metros penalty minute leader Tracy Brunken also join the coaching staff.

Exchange students Mikael Sundelin and Sami Heino set the pace for the Metros this season with fifty-one
points. Sundelin with a team leading twenty-four goals and Heino with a team leading twenty-nine assists.
Mark Dorn would record a twenty goals season and finish with thirty-four points. Mike Stoneburg scored
fourteen goals on way to scoring thirty total points. Nate Kelly would round out the top five a point behind
with seventeen goals and twenty-nine regular season points.

Did You know…the Des Moines Capitols goaltender Scott Clemmenson would go on to a 14 plus season NHL career playing for the New

Matt Seawalson returns for his junior season as the favorite to take the starting position and freshman Dirk Worner arrives
with great skills even for a youngster and secures the roll as back-up. However, as the season progress, the two challenge each
other and provide a solid rotation as the duo ends the season with a combined 18-6 record giving Sioux City their second regular
season championship in thee seasons. It is off the the IHSHL Tournament Championship game for the sixth time in seven seasons.
Mark Bukovich moves up to junior varsity starter posting a 6-7-2 record. Matt will add a JV win in there as well in addition to
another newcomer Chris Galinsky who would finish with a 4-3-1 record.

Dirk freshman 6-3 has emerged as the number one goalie 14-1 record 2 shut outs .880 save percentage 2.47 GAA
After three seasons in goal for the Metros, Chad Stewart joining the team as an 8th grader and now a junior, has moved
to Omaha and now plays for the Lancers. After two seasons there, amassing a league & tournament championships and an
undefeated season, he will spend a season in the North American League and then three seasons in the USHL playing for the
Waterloo Blackhawks and the Sioux City Musketeers. He will go on to join the USHL referee staff and work as a
linesman for five seasons.
The 1993-94 season marks the half way point of the dominance of the Sioux City Metros Hockey team as members if the Iowa
High School Hockey League (IHSHL). In the last five seasons, the Metros have made a showing in the post-season championship
game; winning three times. They have also captured the regular season championship two of the last three seasons.
When the Metros beat the Omaha Gladiatorson February 13th this season 17-0, it marked the fourth time in Metros history that they
have recorded seventeen or more goals in a single game against an IHSHL opponent. During the 1990-91, they did it twice to
the Jr. Lancers; first hanging them with a team and League record twenty-three goals and in a second meeting scoring seventeen
red-lighters. The prior season, 1989-90 the Metros beat the Des Moines Urbandale Jays 17-1.
On February 13th, the Metros hang a team record seventeen goals on the host team Gladiators. Setting a pair of Metros scoring
records are exchange students Mikael Sundelin and Sami Heino. Mikael records a pair of team records including six goals in a
single game and eight points in a single game. Sami also sets a team record with seven assists in a single game and ties the
record of eight points in a single game.

One of the spoils of the the number one seed is taking in the last place team in the league. The Dubuque Devils can manage only
one win this season and face a daunting challenge in this tournament opening match-up. However, they are fresh off the pig-tail
game which saw them upset the eighth seed team from St Joe. The Metros are all over the Devils recording three goals each
period. Five different Metros score goals including four by Mark Doren, two by Mikael Sundelin and one each from
Sam Kincaid, Seth Schramm and Mike Stoneburg. Dirk Worner stops all but one of the Devils
twenty-one shot attempts.
Semi-Final Game
3-Metros vs. Ames Lil’ Cyclones-2
March 5th, 1994
The semi-final offers up a bit more competition as the Metros face the east division champs; Ames finished with sixteen wins,
two of which were at the expense of the Metros. Ames would set the pace scoring first again just forty-seven seconds into
the game. However, Sami Heino would tie the game as the ten minute mark approached and with just under a minutes
remaining in the period Mike Stoneburg would give the Metros the lead for good. Sami Heino would grab another
tally in the second giving the Metros a little cushion. Ames would record a goal in the third, but again, goaltender
Dirk Worner was nearly perfect stopping 32 Lil’ Cyclone shots on goal.
Championship Game
8-Metros vs. Omaha Gladiators-1
March 6th, 1994
The Metros feel good about the championship match-up with sixth best team in the league. The Omaha Gladiators managed just nine
wins this season but are in the championship game having just upset the second best team in the league the day before. The Metros
met the Gladiators twice this season , grabbing two wins including a meeting that resulted multiple single game Metros scoring records.
T.J. Joun would record the period’s only goal when he capitalized and a Nate Kelly pass giving the Metros the lead. However,
the Metros would explode in the second period. Mikael Sundelin would add Hat Trick, Sami Heino records two goals, T.J. Joun
would adds a his second goal of the game and a single tally from Nate Kelly. The Metros would launch forty-three total shots on
goal; nineteen of them coming in the middle stanza. The win continues the Metros IHSHL dominance; winning a third state
championship in the last four seasons.

After a quarter-final victory over the Ames Lil’ Cyclones the Mets defeated the top seeded Tigers from Des Moines Valley-Dowling.
The up-set over the tournament favorites saw Andrew Dooly scored a pair of red-lighters while Nick & Nate Low, Davie Meyers and
Ron Lewison each tallied once. In Sundays championship game, Nate Lowe and Andrew Dooley would both score goals but the
Metros couldn’t find the elusive much needed third goal.

Entering his second season at the helm, Jim Peck steers the Metros to another winning season. He is selected to coach the
west division All-Star team and, if not for a huge upset at the state tournament, would have been competing for a second state
championship is as many seasons. Jeff Gray, Clayton Wiffen and Tracy Brunken all return for a second season. Joining
them is another past Metros player Burke Lake. Tracy, Clayton and Burke also have success of their own; leading the Metros
to their first ever JV State Championship. Dick Augustine and Roger Kelly take on the Co-Team Rep duties this season.

Mark Doren, his twenty-three goals and twenty-two assists are both team highs. Also making another showing

Mike Stoneburg also makes the scorers list with seventeen goals and eleven assists. Robbie Jaynes and
Chris Headquist both record twenty-one points, Robbie with a dozen goals and Chris with eighteen assists.

Damon Keith would pick up the junior varsity starting spot and post a 9-3-1 record and along the way grab a varsity
victory as well. Mark Bukovich finishes with a 3-3-2 and Chris Galinsky with a 2-1 record. Their regular season record
of 14-7-3 is good enough for a third place seed in the league tournament. Three games later the Metros will claim their
first ever Junior Varsity tournament championship in a 2-1 victory over the regular season champs Des Moines Capitols.
Did You Know…past Sioux City goaltender Chad Stewart will help lead the Omaha Lancers to a perfect 24-0 season
posting a 12-0 record. He would receive one of three IHSHL silver Glove awards for his second best save percentage
in the league, and lead the Lancers to their first IHSHL Championship, defeating the Mason City Mohawks.

Long time USA Hockey officials Kirk Swanson and Bob Batcheller work the lines in this contest between the Musketeers and
the Green Bay Gamblers. Kirk and Bob were both familiar faces; reffing in the IHSHL and working the lines in the USHL.
Fellow high school player and official wearing the bands here is Doran Doty. He played four high school seasons for the
Ankeny Hawks, and two more for the Des Moines Buccaneers before becoming a USAH official.

by a single SYHA family with seven, that includes four Championship victories. Taylor would play in the championship game
all four of his high school seasons. Seth would play in the big game three of his four seasons with the Metros.

the tournament as the favorite, having posted an undefeated season of twenty-four games.

Sioux City starts their defense against Ames who finished second in the east division they mustered only nine wins all season.
The underdogs would grab the lead in the first and secure it with two more in the second. An unassisted goal by Nate Kelly
kept the game within reach as the second ended. The game would stay deadlocked until with ninety-three seconds remaining a
Chris Hedquist tally put the Metros down by just a single point. However, the Ames defense would prevail sending the
Metros to the consolation bracket.

Looking to save face the Metros need a win to get back among the leagues top teams in the tournament. Taking on the
Waterloo Warriors who ended the season with only two wins, grabbed an upset victory in the first round. They play the

The Warriors battle back in the third, but goaltender Matt Seawalson is able to stop eleven of the twelve attempts
and advancing to the next round.
Fifth Place Game
4-Metros vs. Omaha Gladiators-3
March 12th, 1995
The Metros would have to mount a rally to defeat the Omaha Gladiators to grab the tournament’s fifth best honors. Walt
Johnson would get the Metros on the board first but Omaha would answer back twice by the time the first ended. The
teams would trade goals in the second period with Sam Kincaid keeping the Metros within striking distance with a final
period still remaining. Sam Kincaid‘s second goal would tie it up and Robby Jaynes would grab the game winner with
just under five minutes left in the game and securing a second win this weekend.

Sioux City finishes the regular season as the third best team in the league with fourteen wins. Des Moines wins the league and enters the
tournament as the favorite. The Metros draw a strong Omaha Jr. Lancers in the first round. Metros Andrew Dooley’s goal keeps the game
tied until fifty-five seconds in to the third extra period when Matt Andrews would record the game winner. Goaltender Damon
Keith would stop all but one of the Lancers seventeen shots on goal.
The Metros offence is on fire is the semi-final game; hanging seven goals on the Lil’ Cyclones including two each from Nick Loe and
Matt Andrews. Mark Munger, Davey Meyers, and Andrew Dooly also scored for the Metros.
In what is the first chance for the Metros to capture a Junior Varsity championship the Metros match-up with the tournament favorites
the Capitols. Des Moines scores first in the first but a Matt Andrews goal in the second knots the game. After a wild scrum in
front of the Cap’s net; J.J. Arthur pokes in what will be both the game winning and Championship winning goal. Damon Keith
is terrific again, stopping twenty-six scoring attempts.

This season marks the 25th season of SYHA/Metro Hockey / 20th Anniversary of the Iowa High School Hockey League
The Kansas City Blades join the IHSHL and makes for a 10 team league. The Capitols move to the east.
The league is equally divided into two five team divisions and play a twenty-six game schedule.
East Division: Ames Little Cyclones, Des Moines Capitols, Dubuque Devils, Mason City Mohawks and Waterloo Warriors
West Division: Kansas City Jr. Blades, Omaha Gladiators, Omaha Jr. Lancers, Sioux City Metros and the St Joe Griffons.
IHSHL JV State Tournament March 1st-3rd in Omaha, NE / Varsity State Tournament March 7th-10th in Des Moines, IA
The Metros finish with a 16-10 record good enough for third in the west. This is the second of a three season break for the Metros
as they rebuild their program that would eventually win three more state Championships, a second place and a third place in the
next seven seasons. Trent Mozak and Mike Stoneburg lead the team in scoring with 34 and 33 points and in penalties with
70 & 62 minutes. They place five players in the All-Star game, five on the All-State Team & three more in the Chicago Showcase.

Back for a third year is this season’s eventual IHSHL Coach of the Year Jimmy Peck. Joining him are veteran coaches Jeff Gray
and Clayton Wiffen. Jeff is a former Musketeer player and member of the Musketeer first regular season & Clark Cup championships
and is also a two-time IHSHL State Championship coach. Clayton logged four seasons and was a three-time Metros leading scorer
before playing in the USHL, NCAA and Europe. Landon Blatchford joins the Metros this season with four state championship games
under his belt; winning back-to-back in 1990 & 1991. He would go on to coach for five seasons with the Metros eventually
winning two more back-to-back state championships as a coach in 1998 and 1999. Dick Augustine is back for more punishment
serving sas the grizzeled team Rep.

Four of the top five scorers also make the heavy hitters list this season. Just a freshman this season, Trent Mozak
leads the way with thirty-four total points, ten goals and a team leading twenty-four assists. Senior Mike Stoneburg
and Junior Walt Johnson both score a team high nineteen goals and finish with thirty-three and thirty-one points.
Junior Mark Munger and Sophmore Chresten Jenson score eleven times; Mark with twenty-four and Chresten
with twenty regular season points.

Metros top scorer Trent Mozak also lead the way with seventy penalty minutes. Top scorers Mike Stoneburg

on the hitter list with forty minutes. Another top scorer Mark Munger would round out the list withtwenty-
eight penalty minutes.

Did You Know…after four season as a Metro where he was a consistently high scorer and team leading scorer, Kyle Worner he would
play in the USHL for two seasons where he would become the Tri-City Storm’s first ever, first round draft pick.

In 1996 Head Coach Jimmy Peck is selected as the IHSHL’s Coach of the Year. This is Jimmy’s first of three different stints with
the Metros. This Coach of the Year Award would catch him between League Championships having won his first one in 1994 and his
second one in 2002. He would also lead the Metros to two additional championship games during his fourteen seasons behind the bench.
Between the Pipes
Returning junior Damon Keith will take on the starting duties this season. Along for the ride is freshman Jake Hinderman
and seventh grader Ryan Dohrmann. Damon would use his experience and skills putting together a winning season of nine
wins and seven losses. However, it was the youngsters who really came of age this season; Jake would see time in ten varsity
contests also posting a winning 7-3 record. Combining for a 16-10 season it was only good enough for a sixth place regular
season finish. All three goalies would also hone their skills during the junior varsity season finishing with a 16-7-1 record.
Damon Keith Jake Hinderman
Metros 1994-97 Metros 1995-99
Damon Keith records eighteen games this season. His nine wins helps the Metros along to a second place finish in the
west division and an overall third place finish among all tem teams. He would sport an .857 save percentage and grab a
pair of shut-out along the way. He would also see some JV time winning seven games, add another shut-out to his
resume and give-up just a dozen goals in nine games.
As a freshman, Jake Hinderman sees time in both JV and varsity games. Starting in ten varsity contests, he posts an
impressive seven and three record and records a goals against average of three and grabs a single shut-out during the
season. He would also finish the JV season with eight wins, seven losses and a tie again recording just under his
three goals per game average.
Ryan Dohrmann
Metros 1995-01
This season Ryan Dohrmann starts out on a nearly unheard of high school hockey career; joining the Metros this season
as a seventh grader he sees time in five JV games, grabs his first win and posts a .921 save percentage. Ryan will go on
to a successful career between the pipes for the Metros, playing in three State Championship games and
winning two of them.
The Rookies
This season’s rookie players get a special haircut prior to the start if the state tournament. While it didn’t do much good this season…all
eleven of these players will eventual become IHSHL State Champions three seasons later. Goaltenders Ryan Dohrmann & Jake
Hinderman and forward Matt LeGree would go on to capture two back-to-back State Championships for the Metros.
Clint Stiles
Metros 1995-98
This is Clint’s first of three seasons with the Metros. He played split season between junior varsity and varsity. Playing in just nine
JV games, he grabbed three goals and six assists. His schedule was varsity heavy; missing just one game during the regular season.
The sophomore’s six goals and seven assists was ninth best among all Metros scorers.

Team Captains Walt Johnson, Mike Stoneburg and Sam Kincaid pick up their 5th place State Tournament trophy in Des
Moines (1996). Walt Jr. would fall in the brief gap of Metro dominance during the 90’s that saw him with just on chance at a
state championship. However, Mike and Sam both would collect a State Championship in 1994.
Over three seasons Walt Johnson would record thirty-seven goals & fifty-five regular season varsity points. Both his junior
and senior seasons saw him earn trips to the IHSHL All Star Game and the Chicago Showcase as well as a selection to the
IHSHL All-State team. He was a top five scorer his junior season and during his last season he would lead the team
in goals and scoring.
Did You Know… Walt’s dad is Musketeer Hall of Famer Walt Johnson. He was a team high scorer all three seasons, he lead
the team in 77-78 with 101 points. The following season, his offence floundered and only scored 91 points!!! Walt remains the
second highest all-time Musketeer scorer with 286 points. Remember…he did all this from the blue line and during a 48 game schedule.
But Wait – There’s More…Walt would go on to coach the Metros to back to back IHSHL State Championship in 1998 & 1999.
Those wins are sandwiched between a fourth place finish in ’97 and a heartbreaking loss in the 2000 championship game.

The Metros enter the post-season as the fifth seeded team finishing the season with a sixteen and ten record; third in the west
and fifth overall. The regular season champions from Mason City and the Omaha Jr. Lancers are both tournament favorites.
After a disappointing last season, the Metros look to get back to their winning ways having played in the championship game
the last five consecutive seasons.

March 8th, 1996
The Metros open the tournament facing the fourth seeded Des Moines Capitols; they would complete their regular season
just three points ahead of the Metros. The Caps would defeat the Metros in both meetings this season in 2-1 and 4-3 wins on
their home ice and the Metros will be looking for payback. Chresten Jensen would get the Metros on the board first but the
Caps would return the favor minutes later. That would be it for the Metros offence as a single goal in the third iced the
game for the Caps. Goaltender Damon Keith stopped all but two of the Caps twenty-eight shots on goal.
Semi-Final Game
6-Metros vs. Waterloo Warriors-1
March 9th, 1996
The Metros ready to take on the Waterloo Warriors. Mustering only five wins during the regular season, the Warriors did
win the first round and are looking to somehow rescue their disastrous season with a victory in the semi-finals. Sioux City
would jump on top scoring the period’s only goal; a red-lighter by Chresten Jensen. The second period is all Sioux City
as the register goals from Sam Kincaid, Trent Mozak and two from Mike Stoneburg. The Warriors would get on the
board in the third but Mike‘s third goal of the night drained any hope for a last period Waterloo rally.
Fifth Place Game
3-Metros vs. Ames Lil’ Cyclones-2
March 10th, 1996
Sioux City look to grab the consolation round championship as the take on the Ames Lil’ Cyclones. They end the season
with just ten wins but are high on an unexpected tournament victory on the second round. The game stays close with both
teams exchanging tallies in the first including one by Jeff Kempter. Sam Kincaid puts the Metros ahead in the second
but Ames retaliates tieing the game for a second time. However, it’s Walt Johnson with the game winner half way
through the final period. Goalie Damon Keith stops twenty-one Ames shots on goals.

This season saw another planned out coaching transition. This would be Head Coach Jimmy Peck’s final season.
Serving this season as Assistant Coach, former Musketeer player Walt Johnson would take over next season. Again,
a well-planned coaching transition took place and the Metros continued with their winning ways.
IHSHL JV State Tournament February 28th-March 1st in Ames, IA / Varsity State Tournament March 6th-9th in Omaha, NE
The Metros finish the season with a disappointing 15-11 season and a third place finish in the west division. However, they
still would have seven players with All-Star selections, the most of any team in the league. They would muster a fourth
place finish at the State Tournament. Matt Andrews leads the team in regular season scoring with twenty-four points. They
place seven players in the All-Star Game, six on the All-State Team and four in the Chicago Showcase.
At the time, this middle of the pack finish during the regular season & a fourth place showing at State is just that…
however as the big picture develops, it is a Sioux City program hearting up to begin the second part in what would
become a twelve season IHSHL High School dynasty
The JV team posts a similar record of 16-7-3, good enough for a first place finish in the much more dominate west division.
Sioux City places three players among the IHSHL Junior Varsity’s top five scorers; Greg Gill is ties for top scorer with nineteen
goals and a league best twenty-seven assists. Matt Tonjum is second with eighteen goals and twenty-four assists and
Brent Sanders is fifth with eighteen goals and fourteen assists.

This is Jimmy Peck‘s final season as Metros Head Coach. After four straight winning seasons and a State Championship
victory, he wraps-up this final season as the Metros head coach. He is selected as last season’s Coach of the Year and the
prior season’s All-Star Game coach. This is just the first of three different stints for Jimmy as the Metros head coach. Past
Musketeer & Metros Head Coach Walt Johnson joins the coaching staff and is staged to take the helm next season for
the Metros. Re-joining the coaching staff this season are Jeff Gray and Landon Blatchford. Jeff is a former Musketeer
player and Metros assistant coach. Landon is a former Metros player with a pair of back-to-back tournament championships
under his belt. Dick Augustine is back for his ninth and final season as the Metros Team Rep.

Between the Pipes
Sioux City returns this season with what could be one of the best goaltending trios Sioux City has seen in many seasons.
Senior Damon Keith returns for his third season between the pipes and joining him again are up-and-coming goalies
Jake Hinderman and now eighth grader Ryan Dohrmann. However two starters, Damon and Jake combined record
of 15-11 only earns them a fifth place regular season finish.

Metros 1900-00
It is again the senior Damon Keith this season who garners the starting position and posts a thirteen and eight record. His save
percentage of .869 is tops among all three Metro net minders. This season would begin to usher in the second wave of Metro’s
dominance among the IHSHL teams including a pair of championships, a second and a third place finishes over the next four
seasons. Damon would be an IHSHL Varsity All-Star game participant, a member of the All-State First Team and
an Academic Achievement Award recipient.

The sophomore Jake Hinderman will see both varsity and junior varsity games. Finishing the season with a pair of varsity wins
and three losses and a dozen JV wins and just five losses. Also returning for is second season is eighth grader Ryan Dohrmann who
sees time in seven JV contests recording four wins, a pair of losses and a tie.
Like last season; Jake and Ryan continue to hone their skills and gain experience that will eventually make them both IHSHL
State Champions. They finish the JV season with a combined record of 16-7-3, Jake going 12-5-2 and Ryan 4-2-1.
For the fourth time in Metros history they recorded seventeen or more goals in a single game against an IHSHL opponent.
This season the Metros would defeat the St. Joe Griffins 17-2 in this January 26th meeting. During the 93-94 season the Metros
beat the Omaha Gladiators 17-0. Three seasons earlier the Metros hung a team and League record 23 goals in a single game on the Jr.
Lancers winning 23-1 and later in the season beat them again 17-1. The prior season to that, 1989-90 the Metros beat the Des Moines
Urbandale Jay 17-1.

Junior Clint Stiles and sophomore Trent Mozak watch the action from the bench. This would be both players second season with
the Metros. Clint Stiles would grab four goals and six assists this season and eventually win the first of back-to-back IHSHL State
Championships the following season. Sophomore player Trent Mozak is also playing his last season with the Metros; pegged
to play in the USHL next season. Trent would lead the team in goals with twenty and his sixteen assists tied him as the Metros
leading scorer. He would go on to play four seasons in the USHL for the Sioux City Musketeers.

west division and fifth overall. Finishing ahead of the Metros in the west are the Omaha entries the Jr. Lancers and the Gladiators;
the former winning the league with twenty-four wins and only one loss and tie. Des Moines and Dubuque are also strong
in the east having eighteen and seventeen wins as well.

Sioux City starts the weekend out with the Omaha Gladiators. Seeded fourth they did finish the season with seventeen wins and
nine losses, just four points better than the Metros. Both goaltenders stay perfect during the first period with Metros goalie Damon
Keith stopping all nine of the Omaha attempts. Sioux City would take the lead on a Clint Stiles red-lighter followed later by one
from Kyle Worner. Damon is again perfect stopping ten of the gladiators shot on goal. Matt Andrews would open the period with
another Sioux City goal. Omaha would fight back with a pair of unanswered tallies and close the gap, but a goal from Chresten
Jensen with forty-five seconds remaining puts the game out of reach for the Gladiators. Damon Keith turns aside all but two of
the Gladiators twenty-four total shots.
Semi-Final Game
4-Metros vs. Omaha Jr. Lancers-8
March 8th, 1997
Saturday’s game doesn’t get any easier as the Metros find themselves up against the regular season champions and tournament & the
hometown favorites the Jr. Lancers. However, it is the Metros that strike first on goals from Trent Mozak and Walt Johnson
ending the period ahead by one. Just over two minutes into the second period, Greg Gill would add another goal giving the
Metros a two goal cushion; it would also awake the sleeping giant; Omaha explodes for three goals before the period ends,
retaking the lead for good. In the third, Sioux City could only muster another goal from Trent Mozak as the Lancers
poured in four more red-lighters, sending the Metros to the consolation game.
Consolation Place Game

March 9th, 1997
After playing both of the leagues top team tough, the Metros seem to be running out of gas. Taking on the east division’s
best team from Des Moines. The Capitols were in control most of the game scoring four unanswered goals; one in the first,
one in the second period and two more in the third. Sioux City would gain some momentum late in period on a Nick Mills
goal with just over four minutes remaining. Another one from Matt Andrews with forty-seven seconds left was too
little too late and the Metros would have to settle for a fourth place finish this season.

Sioux City enters the JV tournament as the best in the west and second best overall winning sixteen and tieing three games during the
twenty-six game season. Despite a losing record, it’s the Warriors get on the board first. However, goals in the first and second from
Greg Gill put the Metros ahead and a final period red-lighter by Jeff Kempter would send the Metros to the winners bracket.
The second game would find the Metros opponent from Ames the underdog in this contest and the Metros quickly jumped on the
Lil’ Clones on a Greg Gill goal just seventeen seconds into the game. However, Ames would stun the Metros with the unanswered
goals. Robbie Lessard would close the gap, but an empty netter by Ames ended the Metros bid for a tournament championship.
Both of today’s teams in the consolation game are evenly matched with similar regular season records, but, the Metros did
defeat the Blades in all three regular season meetings. However, the game is never really in doubt, as the Metros storm out of

The Metros would continue their 12 season domination of the IHSHL with a fourth state championship in eight seasons.
With a roster combination of big, fast and smart, the Metros would get Sioux City back on the Championship winning track.

The IBP Ice Center opens on November 20th, 1997 with a Grand Opening on December 4th. The Metros will
play their first game on the new ice December 14th against the Waterloo Warriors. Prior to the ice center opener,
they played their first six home games at the Audi.
Sioux City manages a second place finish in the west with a 18-8 record and a fourth place finish overall the 10 team league.
Kyle Worner leads the Metros and the League in scoring with forty-seven points. Twelve other Metros score over ten points.
They have five players (Nick Mills, Willie Persinger, Worner, Creston Jensen, Jake Hinderman) earn All-Star honors. Four
players (Jensen, Mills, Persinger, Worner) and head coach Walt Johnson in the Chicago Showcase.
The Metros would defeat the Omaha Jr. Lancers and bring home a fourth State Championship in eight seasons. Greg Gill and

Walt Johnson takes the Metros Head Coaching position for a second time. He was also the head coach during the infant
seasons of the IHSHL, coaching the Metros during the1980 and 1981 seasons. However, this talent pool was much deeper
this time around; eventually winning two state championships and flirting with a third. This season’s State Tournament
winning coach is also selected Head Coach of the Midwest’s Chicago Show Case team.
Landon Blatchford joins as Varsity Assistant coach for his third season and this season solely taking on the JV head
coaching duties. No stranger to successful hockey, Landon played in four consecutive State Championship games;
winning two of them in 1990 and 1991. He to would help the Metros win their first of to their back-to-back varsity
state tournament wins and also lead the Metros to the JV finals.
New to the staff this season is Team Manager Mike Stiles and back for a second season is Team Rep Doc Dohrmann

Showing off the depth of this season’s scoring prowess the top three scorers are juniors. Kyle Worner will leads the way
recording a team leading twenty-four goals and twenty-three assists good for forty-seven points. Brent Sanders and
Jeff Kempter are second with twenty-eight points, Brent with fourteen goals and Jeff with eleven goals. Seniors Clint
Stiles would record ten goals and fifteen assists and for the third time in three seasons, Chresten Jensen finishes as a
Metros top five scorer with eleven goals and thirteen assists. Thirteen Metros score ten or more points this season.

Top five scorer Clint Stiles and sophomore Dusty Browning both record seventy-three minutes in the box this season.
Junior Matt LeGree finishes just six minutes shy of the leaders with sixty-seven minutes. Senior Chris Lohr would
record sixty minutes and Metros leading scorer Kyle Worner would round out the list with fifty-seven penalty minutes
97-98 Between the Pipes
Between the pipes, the season looks good for the Metros, Like several years past they are able to again place
and experienced goalie in the starting position in junior Jake Hinderman. Along side him is another experienced
youngster Ryan Dohrmann, waiting and willing to fulfill his duty as the back-up. Jake will take on most of the
varsity games recording a 14-8 record but Ryan will still se time in four games winning all of them. Together the
put in a third place regular season record of 18-8. However this tandem is not done yet, after being absent from the
championship game for three seasons the Metros are back, they defeat the Omaha Lancers 3-2, Jake along with
teammate Greg Gill are named Tournament MVP’s.

The junior varsity also has a banner season winning its first ever Regular Season Championship. Ryan Dohrmann will
lead the way this season recording an amazing 14-1-4 record. Chris McCline will add five winds and Nick Schultz an
additional win giving the Metros a 20-2-4 record. Tournament play saw the Metros back in the championship game but
lose in overtime the the Kansas City Jets.
Did You Know…the orange seats currently in the IBP Ice Center were from the Auditorium. Originally, the removable seats,
“C” section, These were the seats that folded in-out in front of the Balcony section.

This is the sixth time in Metros history they have recorded seventeen or more goals in a single IHSHL game. This time is another
seventeen goal blanking of the visiting St. Joe Griffons. (The following day they would defeat them 15-2). Other teams falling
to the high scoring Metros are the Omaha Lancers (twice), the Omaha Gladiators and the Des Moines Urbandale Jays

All three of these players would become Metros State Champions. Greg Gill would capture a second championship
the following season in the Metros second series of back-to-back IHSHL victories. Chad Blanche would play just a
single season for the Metros splitting his sophomore season between the varsity and JV games. Clint Stiles would help
the Metros to their first championship since their last one just four seasons earlier.

Metros 1995-98
Clint would record six goals and seven assists during his sophomore season and a fifth place finish at the post season
tournament. The following season, he would see a drop in production recording just four goals and ten assists, however
he would see the Metros continue to improve this prior year finishing fourth in the Stare Tournament.
After helping the team to two successful seasons, Clint Stiles is back for a third season and leading the Metros as one of the
team captains. He would play a complete season netting ten goals and fifteen assists; his fifteen points was fifth best among
all Metros scorers. He played a huge physical game and lead the team in penalty minutes with 73 minutes in the box. Clint
would also record as pair of goals & assists during the the first of back-to-back IHSHL State Championships for
the Metros.

The Metros open against the .500 Devils and recorded wins both times they played this season with the Metros outscoring
the Devils 18-8. The game saw both team’s defense playing at a high level, with Sioux City recording just five shots and Dubuque
just four in the opening period. However, one of those shots from Greg Gill would foil the Devil goaltender for a one goal lead.
The Metros would pick up the pace in the second launching eleven shots on goal, this time it was Chresten Jensen who found
the back of the net. The Devils returned the favor in the final period; putting a dozen shots on goal but goaltender
Jake Hinderman would remain nearly perfect, stopping twenty of the Devils twenty-one attempts.
Semi-Final Game
3-Metros vs. Omaha Gladiators-1
March 7th, 1998
Saturday meeting with the west divisions best team and regular season runner-up the Omaha Gladiators. The Metros did beat
the Gladiators two of the three meeting this season so this game could go either way. Both goaltenders were flawless in the first
but in the second the Gladiators did beat Jake and take the lead. However, the third period was all Sioux City; Clint Stiles,
Greg Gill and Dusty Browning all grabbed red-lighters and goaltender Jake Hinderman again would give-up
just a single goals on twenty attempts.
Championship Game
3-Metros vs. Omaha Jr. Lancers-2
March 8th, 2002
Sunday’s championship finds the Metros matched-up with the home town Jr. Lancers; fresh off an upset over the top ranked
Des Moines Capitols. The Metros won three of the four regular season meetings, but none of the games were by more than
two goals.
Chresten Jensen would waste no time putting the Metros on top scoring just a minute and twenty-seven seconds into
the game. However, the Jr. Lancers would also retaliate twice before the period ended. Sioux City would dominate
the second period; Greg Gill would get the equalizer and Clint Stiles the game winner at the twelve minute mark.
Goaltender Jake Hinderman was perfect the final two periods and stopped a game total twenty six of twenty-eight
Jr. Lancers scoring attempts.
Greg Gill and Jake Hinderman were name the State Tournament’s Co-Most Valuable Players. Greg would record
a tournament high of three goals and an assist while Jake would allow just four goals on sixty-nine scoring attempts.

The Junior Varsity would win the regular season championship this season, setting the table for two unprecedented championship
weekends next March in Sioux City and St. Joe

The regular season championship would come through Sioux City this season. Finishing just a point ahead of the east
division champs from Mason City they earn twenty wins and just two losses and four ties. This is Sioux City’s first JV
regular season championship.. They place five scorers; Matt Tonjum, Dusty Browning, Brant Mozak, Dustin
White and Robbie Lessard among the top ten league scorers.
Zach Lanning, Brant Mozak and Dusty Browning would score goals in the opening round sending the Metros to the
semi-finals. Dusty Browning and Brant Mozak also recorded goals in the win over Waterloo.
The tournament’s championship game features a meeting between the west division’s two best teams; Sioux City and
Kansas City. Meeting four times this season, the teams tied twice and split the other two games. This one looked to
be close and it eventually it did not disappoint.
The first period saw the only scoring for the next seventy-five plus minutes of playing time when Robbie Lessard
and Dusty Browning traded goals with the Blades. After that, neither goalie could be foiled until just over two
minutes into the fourth overtime when a shot got passed a worn-out goaltender Ryan Dohrmann.

The Lincoln Jr. Stars and Des Moines Oak Leafs would join the league adding a team in both divisions for a total of 12 teams in the league.
They play a 20 game schedule. Varsity State Tournament held March 12th-14th in St. Joe, MS

The Metros would finish the season second place in the west and third place overall in the 12 team league. Offence was the theme,
as the Metros poured in 163 goals in just twenty regular season games. For the second time, Kyle Worner would lead the Metros in
scoring while nine other players would tally twenty plus points.
Kyle Worner is a top ten league scorer as is Jake Hinderman as top ten league goaltender.
The Metros would continue their winning way and capture another IHSHL Championship, their fifth in nine seasons.
The Metros would start out the tournament with a convincing 6-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors. Like the JV team the week before,
they found themselves paired up with the top seeded Des Moines Capitols. However, the Metros would come from behind to win in an
exciting 7-6 victory. The championship game took extra periods but the Metros defeated the Kansas City Jr. Blades 3-2
Kyle Worner scored two Metro goals and added an assist to Trent Mozak’s game winner in the second overtime.

Both Walt Johnson and Landon Blatchford return for another successful season; leading the Metros to a second consecutive
varsity State Title. Walt is selected to coach the West Division All-Stars. The previous weekend, Landon leads the Junior Varsity to
their second State Championship in five seasons. Doc Dohrmann continues to perform valiantly as the Metros Ream Rep.

For the second season in a row, senior Kyle Worner sets the scoring pace with forty-nine points, including a team
high twenty-nine assists. He also places among the League’s to five top scorers. Brent Sanders leads the team with
twenty-two goals and forty-two points. Making the list for the first of three appearances is sophomore Ben Deck.
He records fifteen goals and twenty-five assists. Senior, Matt Tonjum scores fifteen goals for thirty-seven points
and another sophomore who hasn’t see his last high scorer list is Brant Mozak as he rounds out the top five with
nine goals and thirteen assists.

In addition to his team leading forty-nine points, Kyle Worner out paces all the Metros with eighty-two penalty
minutes-that’s nearly four minutes a game. Senior Jeff Kempter was a distant second with fifty-eight minutes. Top
five scorer Ben Deck records thirty-eight minutes and rookie Brandon Lake thirty-three minutes. Junior Robbie
Lessard and sophomore Dustin White both rounded out the top five with thirty-two penalty minutes.
98-99 Between the Pipes
Senior Jake Hinderman will carry the mail this season for the Metros. Backing him up is fourth season is sophomore Ryan
Dohrmann and two traditional sophomores, Ross Patrick and Chris McCline. Jake sees most of the games this season
and rightfully so; he post a thirteen wins and just four losses. Ross, Ryan and Chris split the remaining games collectively
earning an eight and one record. The Metros finish second in the west tied with Kansas City and fifth overall during the
regular season but save their best for last winning their second State Championship is as many seasons.

Senior Jake Hinderman takes on the starting position among his youthful back-ups seeing time in eighteen games and posting thirteen
wins, including a shut-out against Kansas City. He is a top eight league goaltender with a .902 goals against average. Jake would lead
the Metros to victory in all three State Tournament games giving the Metros a repeat championship. Experienced Ryan Dohrmann
would take on the varsity back-up duties seeing time in four games and posting a two and one record. Sharing in the JV starting
duties Ryan logged time in seven games and finished with five wins and two ties. His .918 goals against average is third best
among all junior varsity goaltenders.

Four of the five Sioux City goaltenders; Ryan, Ross, Chris and Marie split the junior varsity duties with all four seeing time. They
would record a winning record of twenty wins compared to just three losses and three ties enough for as second place finish in
the west and third overall.
Ross Patrick would log time in four varsity games posting a 3-0 record give-up just five goals total. He would earn a
majority of the Junior Varsity starts, posting an eight-two record; his .918 goals against average was third best among all
JV goaltenders. Chris McCline also splits varsity and JV recording a 3-0 varsity and a 2-1 junior varsity record; in just
four JV games he records a pair of shut-outs. Marie Withchey would see eight JV games this season also posting a
winning record of five wins and and a tie.

Head Coach Walt Johnson is selected as the IHSHL’s Coach of the Year. This is Walt’s second stint as a Metros head coach;
first taking the reigns for two seasons starting in 1980. He would rejoin the Metros staff in 1996 as an Assistant Coach and take
over the following season. He would lead the Metros to three consecutive championship game appearances, winning two
of them back-to-back in 1998 & 1999.

Landon Blatchford is the first SYHA/Metro player to both win IHSHL / MHSHL championships as both a player and coach.
He would play four seasons with the Metros making an appearance in the tournament championship game all four seasons. The
Metros would win back-to-back Championships in ’91 & ’92. After high school, Landon joined the Metros coaching staff in
1995 and in ’98 & ’99 helped the Metros to another pair of tournament championships. In ’99 he also lead the Junior Varsity
to their second State Championship.

The Metros open the tournament against the fifth seeded Waterloo Warriors. This is the first meeting between these two teams
this season. However, the Metros wasted no time establishing their quest for a second consecutive title. Tim Johnson,
Brant Mozak and Matt Tonjum all scored first period goals and the Metros never looked back. The teams would
trade goals in the second on a Kyle Worner red-lighter. Greg Gill and a second Matt Tonjum goal in the third
would send the Metros to the next round.

7-Metros vs. Des Moines Capitols-6
March 13th, 1999
In the match-up that many consider the “Championship Game” as the Defending Tournament Champs take on the Regular Season Champs.
Ben Deck and Matt Tonjum get the Metros on the board first and ahead by two. However, the Caps score the next three goals,
including one that crossed the goal line just as time expired. For a second time, Sioux City would grab the period’s first two goals;
one from Brent Sanders and a second one from Matt Tonjum. The Caps were able to add one of their own keeping the contest
tied after two. Again, the teams would trade a pair of goals with Kyle Worner and Brent Sanders both tieing the game
after Des Moines scores. With just five minutes remaining in the game, the Capitols changed goaltenders, and seconds
later, Dustin White beat the cold goaltender for the game winning goal.
Championship Game
3-Metros vs. Kansas City Jr. Blades-2 2OT
March 14th, 1999
Both team enter the final game fresh-off tournament upsets; the Metros win over the Capitols and Kansas City’s trouncing the
league’s second best team the Omaha Gladiators. It would be the Metros who capitalize late in this eventual overtime thriller when
Kyle Worner would get the Metros on the board with just forty-seven seconds remaining. The middle period would remain a
stalemate with neither team finding the net.
Just thirty-eight seconds into the Kyle Worner would strike again putting the Metros ahead by two. However, two Metros
penalties would prove costly as the Blades would cash-in on both of the power play opportunities tieing the game. Entering the
first overtime both teams kept it defensive; with the Metros putting just three shots on goal and the Blades just five. The second
overtime was more of the same until with 2:22 remaining Brant Mozak would take a Kyle Worner pass for the win and the
Metros second consecutive State Championship.
Sioux City Hosts the IHSHL Junior Varsity (JV) State Tournament.
JV would finish second in the west division and third overall with a 14-3-3 record. Brant Mozak and Ben Deck would top the
league in scoring with 61 and 55 regular season points. Goalies Ryan Dohrmann and Ross Patrick would finish among the top ten
goaltenders in the League
Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) Junior Varsity Tournament Championship
March 5th-7th / IBP Ice Center Sioux City, IA
The JV team took to the friendly home ice of the IBP Ice Center to take on the beat the Mason City Mohawks 5-0.
Dustin White, Brant Mozak, Ben Deck, Brian Swanson and Zach Lanning all scored goals for the Metros. Goaltender
Ryan Dohrmann would record the shut-out. The Metros are slated to take on the undefeated regular season champions
the Des Moines Capitols. However, the tournament favorites are upset by the Metros and advance to the championship game.
In a repeat match-up of last season’s championship game; the Metros look to avenge their four overtime loss the the Blades.
Goals from Ben Deck and Zach Lanning put the Metros ahead for good. Goalie Ryan Dohrmann stopped twenty of the
Blades scoring attempts and only surrendered two goals on fifty-six shots all weekend.

98-99 Between the Pipes
Both Jake Hinderman and Ryan Dohrmann returns this season a year older and a year more experienced and ready to
defend their IHSHL Championship. Also joining the Metros goalies corps are sophomores Ross Patrick, Chris McCline
and Marie Witchey. Jake will carry the mail again this season posting a winning 13-4 record but the young goalies all
seeing some varsity action; Ryan would go 2-1, Chris and Ross both would go 3-0. The Metros finish the season with a 15-5
record, a tie for the second spot with the Kansas City Jets. Thee games later the Metros and the Jets would get the chance
to break the tie in the IHSHL championship game. It is the Metros who come out in tope in a 3-2 victory giving the Metros
another second championship in a row.
The Junior Varsity would also have success this season with a reliable rotation. All four of the underclassmen
would see time and post winning records; Ross Patrick 8-2, Ryan Dohrmann & Marie Witchey 5-0 and
Chris McCline 2-1. The Metros would meet up with the Jets again a week later in the JV Championship game and
come out victorious beating the Jets 2-1
