season in six they have missed the tournament all together

Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) Junior Varsity Tournament Championship

Sioux City grabs the fourth spot in the west division and finishes fifth overall. They meet-up with the east divisions
best team from Quad City. Metros goaltender Jackson Roberson stops twenty-nine shots on goal but the Metros can’t
generate any offence in this loss the the Blues. Game two would see the Metros grab an early lead on a Drew Koontz
tally but then surrender three unanswered goals. A Sam Brower goal in the third put the Metros back in the game but
eventually fall short in this tournament ending losss to the Lancers.

season.
Assistant Jimmy Peck returns for a second season and Jeff Gray for his fourth. Also back for a second season

Heavy Hitters
Cody Clark            Zach Twillman        Brandon Carlson          A.J. Boose             Jordan Reynolds

Cody Clark makes his third return in as many seasons as the Metros penalty minute leader with 102. Ironically, Cody will
now be seeing first hand what I put up with for his three seasons 😉  Zach Twillman makes a respectable run at Cody’s amassed
minutes, but falls short with eighty-eight penalty minutes. Leading scorer Brandon Carlson again makes both lists with
seventy-six minutes of shame before getting free. Also a top five scorer, A.J. Boose records sixty-two minutes and
Jordan Reynolds makes his first appearance on the list with thirty-nine penalty minutes.

Between the Pipes
Senior Josh Stoos takes on the starting position this season. Facing another span of lean goaltender seasons, Josh will again carry
the mail for the Metros playing a bulk of the contests and finishing the season with an 11-12 varsity record and a pair of shut-outs.
Goaltenders Jackson Roberson and Mac Lui would also see some time in goal as Metros. Briar Burns and Ben Morehead would
also see time in several JV games both posting records of 4-1-1 and 4-4. Mac would also post a 3-0 JV record.

Josh Stoos
Metros 2010-13

Josh Stoos and his third Metros season would see him again take on the starting goaltender duties. After a disappointing
prior season, he would return this season improving greatly recording a winning season; seeing time in 26 games and going
12-11. Along the way, he recorded a pair of shut-out victories against Ames and Dubuque.

Did You Know…Brandon Carlson scored four goals on January 5th, in an 8-5 victory over the Cedar Rapids Jr. Roughriders.

Nick, Andrew, Nate & Sam Bauer
As the 2012-13 season closes, so does an era of Bauers. For nine out of ten seasons, the Metros had a familiar name on the
roster; Nick, Andrew, Nate and Sam all made the score sheets on a regular basis. Collectively, he guys netted 111 goals &
116 assists in 383 JV and Varsity games. Along the way they spent a little time in the box too; recording some 556 penalty minutes

Midwest High School Hockey League (MHSHL) Tournament Championship
February 22nd-February 24th / Ames, IA
Sioux City finished the season strong  gaining the single point need to beat Ames out for the remaining tournament slot.
Grabbing theeighth seed slot. The Des Moines Oak Leafs win the regular season championship losing just three games,
including a shoot-out loss, all season. Waterloo and Kansas City both win their divisions, posting twenty and
twenty-three victories.

Quarter-Final Game
2-Metros vs. Des Moines Oak Leafs-5

February 22nd, 2013
The Metros start the tournament facing the league’s best team. The Oak Leafs looked unbeatable most of the season and
in the teams two meeting during the regular season saw the Leafs out-score the Metros nine to two. The Leafs would grab
a pair of goals in the first and second periods, keeping the Metros scoreless until A.J. Boose finally found the net in
the third.  After another Leafs goal,  Sam Bauer would give the Metros their second goals of the period, however,
its not enough to beat the mighty Oak Leafs.

Semi-Final Game
4-Metros vs. Omaha Lancers-3

February 23rd, 2013
The Metros meet-up with, the recently up-set, Omaha Lancers in the consolation round. Finishing nine points ahead
of the Metros in the west division, the teams did split their regular season meetings with the home team winning
both weekends. A.J. Boose  and Sam Bauer would grab first period tallies giving the Metros a one goal lead. It
was more Metros in the second when Bradon Cherkas put them up by two and Brandon Carlson up by three.
Omaha would mount a rally, but fall short.  Goaltender Josh Stoos stopped twenty-two Lancer attempts.

Fifth Place Game
3-Metros vs. Lincoln Stars-5

February 24th, 2013
Having fell the the Metros the prior weekend, the Lincoln Stars jump out to a two goal lead in the first period. A
Braden Cherkas goal gets the Metros back in the game but the Stars answer back quickly giving them a two goals
advantage as the first ends. Two more Stars tallies in the second seems to put the game out of reach.  Sam Bauer and
Luke Keeble would score just sixty-nine seconds apart in the third and look to make the remainder of the game
interesting…but time would run out before the Metros could get that much needed momentum changing goal.

West:
Kansas City Jets, Sioux City Metros, Omaha Lancers,  Lincoln Stars
Central: Ames Little Cyclones, Des Moines Capitols, Des Moines Oak Leafs, Mason City Mohawks

The Metros’ struggles continue as they finish the season with a 9-18-1 record. However they still place two players,
Mac McFarland and Skyler Beller on the All-Star team. The JV struggles as well and finishes with a 14-11-3 record.

Metros Coaching Staff
Brant Mozak              Jimmy Peck                Jeff Gray              Dan Holzrichter
Head Coach                 Assistant  Coach            Assistant Coach            Team Rep/Manager

Returning for a fifth season is Head Coach Brant Mozak. Joining him again are assistants Jimmy Peck and Jeff Gray
Also back for another season, this time combining the Team Rep and Manger duties is Dan Holzrichter. This season
will be the
final season for these three iconic Musketeers/Metros coaches. Brant was a head coach for five seasons and was
a member of
the Metros 1998 and 1998 State Championship teams. Jimmy coached the Metros for ten different seasons;
capping his career
with a state Championship win in 2003. Jeff also served ten seasons as a varsity assistant and
JV head coach and was at Jimmy’s side in 2003.

High Scorers
Skyler Beller         Mac McFarland        Braden Cherkas        Keegan Lyon          Zach Twillman

Skyler Beller makes his first appearance on the scorers list as a sophomore and does it as the leading scorer with
thirty-nine points with a team leading twenty-four goals. Mac McFarland is just a point behind and leads the team
with twenty-five assists. Branden Cherkas returns to the list scoring seventeen goals and eighteen assists. Keegan Lyon
makes makes the top five with nine goals and ten assists. Usually in the top five for penalty minutes, Zach Twillman
rounds out the top five scorers with eight goals and nine assists.

Heavy Hitters
Jordan Reynolds      Mac McFarland         Zach Twillman             Cory Goss            Chance Jensen

Jordan Reynolds return to the heavy hitter list is a triumphant one, breaking a Metros penalty minute record that
many though could never be topped. Setting a new standard for MHSHL penalty minutes with, Wait for it….183 minutes and
he missed three games!!! Mac McFarland and his 117 minutes-most seasons leads the pack, but this season seem
paltry in comparison. Zach Twillman a top five scorer this season, but always a staple on the heavy hitters list, would
record seventy-nine minutes. Cory Goss was close at hand with seventy-three and Chance Jensen
rounded out the top five with forty minutes.

Junior Varsity High Scorers
Caleb Sneller...7-11-18   Cole Peterson…10-7-17   Tanner Frerichs…8-8-16   Sammy Holzrichter...7-8-15

Between the Pipes
Briar Burns would bring his prior experience to the Sioux City goaltenders convention and grab the initial starting duties for the
Metros. However, sophomore Ben Morehead would also shine during the season and both tenders made a solid duo giving the
coaching staff a reliable starting rotation. Freshman Logan Tejral would take on the junior varsity duties but would also see some time
in several varsity games.

Brian Burns                                                                Ben Morehead
Metros 2011-14                                                                        Metros 2012-16

Briar Burns would garner most of the stars this season as the senior saw time in sixteen games. He would post four wins
including a shut-out against the Dubuque Devils compared to nine losses. He would also see some JV time playing in eight
games surrendering just eleven goals and recording shut-outs against the Des Moines Oak Leafs and Lincoln Stars.

Returning for his second season, sophomore Logan Tejral would assume split the junior varsity starting duties. Seeing time
in a dozen games he would record eight wins, a pair of regulation losses and a tie. Three of those wins were shut-outs against
Ames, Lincoln and the Oak Leafs. Surrendering only seventeen goals during the regular season, his 1.54 goals against average
was one of the top five among JV goaltenders.

Also a returning sophomore Benny Morehead would grab time in both JV and Varsity games. He would get the
nod a dozen times at the varsity level recording three wins, including a shut-out against the Lincoln Stars, but come
up short in five other regular season tilts. Also splitting the JV duties, he played in thirteen games but could only muster
three wins as the JV squad played couldn’t over come  seven one goals losses.

in two years during his junior and senior seasons.

Skyler Beller
Metros 2012-16

Skyler Beller: Skyler Beller would finish his third season as a Metro grabbing top scorer honors for the Metros.

He would assume the Alternate Captain duties. In the consolation game in the League Tournament he would score a pair of regulation
goals and an additional tally in the shoot-out to help the Metros to a long overdue Tournament showing.

Metros secures a third place finish in the League Tournament.

Quarter-Final Game
3-Metros vs. Dubuque Devils-2

February 26th, 2016
Sioux City enter the tournament taking on the eastern division’s top team the Dubuque Devils. However, both teams finish with similar
records and the game is evenly matched.  The Metros score the first period’s only goal and the game stays that way until the third period
when the Metros pull ahead 3-1 on a pair of Skyler Beller goals. With five minutes remaining, the Devils will try to rally scoring  twice
with time still remaining in the period. However, Carter Manthorne is able to thwart the extra-man attack and the Metros win 3-2.

Semi-final Game
0-Metros vs. Kansas City Jets-7

February 27, 2016
With two dominate teams this season, any chance of winning the tournament will include a stop in either Des Moines or Kansas City.
The Metros would draw the Jets, the lesser of two evils. The game is no contest at all. the Jets are clearly the better team launching
thirty-one shots on goal and finding the net seven times. The Metros couldn’t solve the Kansas City defense and the eventual 7-0 game
ended right after it started

Consolation Game
4-Metros vs. Des Moines Oak Leafs-3

February 28th, 2016

Trying to put yesterdays beat down behind them, the Metros prepare to take on the Des Moines Oak Leafs for the
tournament’s third place finish. The Leafs would strike first in the first period for an early lead going into the second
period. However, James Page and Skyler Beller would grab a goal each before the Leafs could tie it up at the end of
two. The teams alternated red-lighters with the Metros getting the first and third goals of the period and the 4-3
win for third place.

opening rounds being single elimination. Tournament March 2nd-5th  in Ames, IA.

Many people think this could be the Metros year for success in the League Tournament. Returning high scorers
Tanner Frerichs, James PageChase LewisonSam Chadwick & Drake Beller all can put points in the board; a top
defensive corps with Jerett Heyl, Logan Visser & Grant Newman and solid goaltending in Carter Manthorne &
Blake Beller make a terrific combination for tournament high hopes.

The Metros start the season looking like one of the teams to beat this season winning ten of their first eleven games of
the season. They would take three heat breaking losses to teams they should have beat, but still win a majority of the
remaining games; finishing in fourth place  with a 19-7-2 regular season record.

Earning the fourth seed in the tournament the Metros would defeat the Des Moines Oak Leafs in the first round. Connor Sand’s two empty
net goals iced a game that was much closer that the final score showed. They would draw the Des Moines Capitols in the second round;
stunning everyone in attendance and handing the Caps just their second regulation loss of the season when James Page scored with 47
seconds remaining in the game. Sioux City entered the championship with high expectations taking on the Waterloo Warriors. However,
a successful penalty shot with a 1:16 remaining ended the Metros run for a Tournament  Championship.

Between the Pipes
The Metros are set to start the season with another solid goaltending duo. Returning youngsters; a junior
Carter Manthorne and freshman Blake Beller are both potential varsity starting goaltenders. Finishing last regular
season around .500 and a third place finish at the tournament this duo would lead the Metros back to the tournament
again this season. Both starters would finish the season among the leagues top ten goalies in goals against and save
percentage. Waiting in the wings and learning the ropes under these two experienced goalies is freshman Will Stokes.

     Metros 2014-17                                                                          Metros 2015-19

Did You Know…both Metros goaltender Carter Manthorne and Blake Beller would finish the season with a varsity five
game winning streak. This was only bested by three other goalies in the league this season. Both goalies would finish in the
wins top ten; Blake in the top five with twelve wins and Carter in the top ten with ten wins.

Carter Manthorne
Metros 2014-17

Carter Manthorne
will join the Metros for his third season. After a nice showing at the MHSHL Tournament the prior season
where he helped put the Metros on the championship radar finishing in third place and leaving the door open for continued
success this season. Carter would record as 7-3 varsity record. His 2.61 goals against average and his .884 save percentage
were both in the top ten among league’s active goaltenders. He is also a multi-season MHSHL Academic Achievement
Award recipient.

Blake Beller
Metros 2015-19

Blake Beller is returning for just his second season; the sophomore is the other-half of a goaltending duo expected to expand
on last season’s successful third place finish in the MHSHL tournament. He would grab a majority of the starts this season
finishing with a 12-6 regular season record. Blake would be voted the  the Metro’s Rookie of the Year during this first full
season of varsity play; he would also complete the season as one of the League’s top four active goalies with a .904 save
percentage and among the top ten active goalies with a 2.31 goals against average. He is a second season recipient of the
MHSHL Academic Achievement Award. Blake is set-up for what could be a very successful two remaining
season as a Metro.

Willie Stokes
Metros 2016-19

Will Stokes would take his spot among a very deep goaltending corps this season. The freshman would garner a majority of the
junior varsity starts and finish the season with a 7-8 record. He did work his first shut-out as a junior varsity goaltender;  a 3-0
win over the Quad City Blues. He will have one more season working a rotation with two very experience goaltenders. This time
will be well spent setting Will up to take on the challenge of earning a starting spot his junior & senior seasons.

High Scorers
Tanner Frerichs          James Page                Drake Beller           Chase Lewison             Jerett Heyl

Senior Tanner Frerichs will lead the way for the Metros putting up sixty-five points; twenty-six goals and thirty-nine
assists before an injury would keep him out of the line-up for the regular seasons last two games. Two other familiar names
top the high scores list in junior James Page and sophomore Drake Beller. James would record twenty-seven goals and
twenty-seven assists while Drake would post twenty-one goals and twenty-six assists. Another junior Chase Lewison would
net thirteen goals for twenty-seven points and senior defenseman Jerett Heyl will round out the top five high scorers
recording six goals and fourteen assists.

For the first time in many seasons, the Metros place three players among the leagues top ten scorers. Three of the Metros High Scorers

Returning to the Heavy Hitter list again is Sammy Chadwick; leading the Metros with sixty-eight penalty minutes.
He would also lead the team in suspensions when he took on the Kansas City bench after what he thought was an illegal

The Metros Junior Varsity would struggle this season failing to put any winning streaks together when they need. They
would finish the season just two points out of the final qualifying slot finishing with 12 wins, 14 losses and a pair of shoot-out
losses that could have made the difference as the season wrapped up.

 Tanner Frerichs
Metros 2013-17

Tanner Frerichs is back again as one of the Metros top scorers, this time he leads the way in scoring netting twenty-six

the America’s Showcase Team. Tanner is a Metros two-time Most Valuable Player, and is a just a handful of Metros players who
were top five High Scorers for three seasons in a row; his freshman year he would finish the season as a top three junior varsity scorer.

Did You KnowTanner Frerichs would become only the third Jr. Musketeer/Metro player to receive the Most Valuable Player
Award multiple times; 2016 & 2017. Kevin Lohry won it in 2003 & 05 and Brian Hartman won it three times in 1975,76 & 78.

Tanner Frerichs finishes his senior season leading the Metros in scoring with sixty-five points.  This season, Tanner sets a new Metros
record for  Career Assists of 103. (Dan Davies, Metros 1988-92, previously held this record with ninty-three). He recorded 172 regular

with three goals and a pair of assists. This season would mark his first selections to the MHSHL All-Star and America’s
Showcase teams. Twice this season, he would put together scoring streaks of five games and a streak of ten
games scoring nineteen points in the last ten games.

His freshman season saw him make the move straight to varsity playing twenty-seven games recording a pair of goals
and eleven assists.
His first Metro goal was in a 5-3 loss to the Des Moines Oak Leafs. Last season he would receive the
Metros Rookie of the

James Page
Metros 2014-18

the captain, James would lead by example with hard work and dedication to the team. He would again crack the

among the top three Metro scorers netting five goals and 10 assists. Dayson would receive the Metro’s Mr. Hustle
Award

Sammy Chadwick
Metros 2014-17

Senior Sammy Chadwick returns for his third season as a Metro and his second in a row that saw him finish in
the top Metro’s varsity Heavy Hitters. Leading the way this season with 68 penalty minutes in the box, he still was able
to record five goals, add pair of assists, as well as serve as one of the unofficial team leaders. Sammy only missed
three games this season, largely due to a two game suspension that resulted after he was forced to defend, both his
honor and that of Sioux City, when he took on the Kansas City bench after a spearing offence went unnoticed.

Grant Newman
Metros 2015-18

Grant Newman enters his third season as a Metro. The junior will assume some of the leadership duties as a

Chase Lewison
Metros 2015-18

High Scorers and Heavy Hitters. He would play a complete schedule this season netting thirteen goals and adding fourteen
helpers. His twenty-seven points is third highest among Metro scorers. Chase plays a very gritty game, he is a grinder in
the corners and has a rare ability to draw opponents focus away from the game.  Metros play-by-play announcer
Marty Werden dubs him the likes of Sandpaper as to best describe his style of play. His thirty-four penalty minutes
was third highest on the team this seasons. This combo of scoring and hustle earns him a spot on the MHSHL All-Star Team.

Taylor Frerichs
Metros 2016-20

Freshman Taylor Frerichs will have some big shoes to fill next season covering for the loss of his high scoring brother.
Fortunately, he has big feet and on-ice offensive talent, physical capabilities and an eye for the technical part of the game.
He would lead the Metros JV team in scoring, notching eleven goals and nine assists in addition to forty-four penalty minutes.
Taylor would play nearly a full varsity schedule as well; recording his first Metro goal in a 7-1 win over the Quad City Blues
on November 20th. The freshman would see significant time in the MHSHL tournament playing in all three games and
adding an assist in the semi-final upset of the Des Moines Capitols.

features the of the nations best  high school players.

Left: Here Walt Werden offers some sage advise to Jeremy Russell; Jeremy joined the Metros with only a few years
experience on the ice, while Walt is a long-time SYHA participant. Both players saw significant time in JV and Varsity
contests this season. These two team mates would also receive some Metro’s Hardware this season; Walt the
Ironman Award and Jeremy the Scotty Culbertson Award.

There’s Two Sides To Every Story…

Current Metros try talking-it-out with past Metros in both these pictures. Left: Tanner Frerichs rarely complains,
but is always willing  to offer up constructive criticism or mention a different way a certain on-ice situation could have
been handled. Right: Captain James Page is always a good source of information and always had the numbers
when I needed them.

as well as working several USA Hockey sanctioned tournaments. In March, he officiated the NAPHL U18 Championship game
and worked the lines in the MHSHL championship game.

Dan Holzrichter looks to get some familiar numbers on another Metros goal; James Page and Drake Beller teamed up several
times to help lead the Metros to a second-place finish at the League Tournament. Also a former high school player, Dan  played
three seasons as a Jr. Musketeer/Metro. He is a fourteen season USA Hockey official, and also served as the Metros Team Rep
for three seasons and played for the Metros in 1978-81.

Jerett Heyl
Metros 2013-17

Senior Jerett Heyl again, takes on the role of team leader and leader of the defensive corps this season. Having
played with several of his fellow defensemen for two-three seasons; his defensive corps is though to be one of the
most experienced in the league. He maintains his reputation as being both a punishing hitter and at the same time
minimizing his time in the box. He would find himself on many offensive rushes and rarely got caught as the
play reversed direction.

Jerett would finish the season as a top five scorer and as top scorer among defensemen netting six goals and fourteen
assists. He would earn MHSHL All-Star honors again this season being selected to the league’s second team. Jerett is a four

Jeremy Russell
Metros 2014-17

Jeremy Russell joined the Metros 2014 as a sophomore with no prior hockey experience. Over the next three seasons he would
have his work cut out for him as he tried to cram into three seasons, what it takes most players twelve or more to do. After two seasons
learning the craft playing junior varsity, Russ finally worked his way in to several varsity games his senior season, as well as earning a
spot on varsity tournament roster and seeing time in all three games as the Metros made a run at the MHSHL championship.

Did You Know…Jeremy would go on to receive the Scotty Culbertson Award this season. Awarded to the junior varsity
player who best reflects an unequaled work ethnic and a desire to always be the best player he could be, both on and off the ice.

the Metros JV players. Two seasons ago he would play a complete JV schedule and crack the varsity line-up on a pair of occasions.
As a sophomore he would finish as one of the junior varsity’s High Scorers with five goals and five assists and as a Heavy Hitters

the MHSHL tournament team where he saw time in all three games. He would score the Metros only goal in a 2-1 loss to the
Waterloo Warriors in the championship game. Reece would go on to receive the Metros Most Improved Player Award this season.

Alec Nieman would see time in both varsity and JV contests this season. Notching a goal and four assists in eighteen varsity games and
four goals and nine assists playing a complete JV schedule. He finished the JV season as both a top five High Scorer and Heavy

Midwest High School Hockey League (MHSHL) Tournament Championship
March 3rd-5th / Ames, IA

Quarter-Final Game
5-Metros vs. Des Moines Oak Leafs-1

March 3rd, 2017
The Metros enter the tournament earning the fourth seed in the tournament and drawing the Des Moines Oak Leafs, a team that finished
just three points behind the Metros. As expected, it is a evenly matched pairing and one that sees the Metros outplayed and out scored
as the first period ends. However, after that…it’s all Sioux City. Drake Beller and Connor Sand each grab a pair of goals and Tanner
Frerichs  gets the game winner for a 5-1 victory.

Semi-final Game
6-Metros vs. Des Moines Capitols-5

March 4th, 2018
The win puts the Metros in the semi-finals pitted against the 25-1 regular season champions and seemingly unbeatable Des Moines
Capitols. Sioux City jumps on the Caps scoring twice in the minute & a half of the game, Des Moines answers twice, but Sioux City
scores  two more before the period ends. It’s all Caps in the second as they tie the contest at four goals apiece. The Metros, again,
stun the Caps with a goal in the first minute of the period, and it takes the Caps most of the period to even the score. As time winds
down and  the Capitols killing a major penalty, the Metros pull the goalie and with just over a minute to go, James Page buries the
game winner for the tournament’s most surprising upset.

Championship Game
1-Metros vs. Waterloo Warriors-2

March 5th, 2018
Both teams enter the championship game with second round upsets and brimming with confidence. Both teams have similar records
but the Metros have the mental edge having beat the Warriors both time at the start of the season. The game remains deadlocked
during until six minutes into the second when Reece McDonald put the Metros on the board. Waterloo answers back with just
over four minutes remaining in the second. The game remains tied through the third and Sioux City gets a chance to win it when a
Waterloo penalty puts the Metros on the power play with less than just two minutes remaining. However, an errant pass,
a lucky bounce and a trip from behind, give Waterloo a successful penalty shot opportunity, winning the game 2-1.

Heavy Hitters again this season the totaled twenty-two penalty minutes. Chase had a way of successfully diverting the
opposition’s focus away from the game and on to him. His mental game was just as good as his physical one and he used
both the the Metros advantage.  He was a selection to the 2018 MHSHL Second All-Star Team.

Jesse Monell is just the second past Metros player to win a State/Tournament Championship as both a player and Coach.

record of of ten game winners set nine seasons prior.

Easton Ransford
Metros 2017-20

Easton Ransford
joined the Metros this season as a sophomore. One of his goals at the beginning of the season was
to crack the varsity line-up and see some time at the top level. Getting the nod in the Metros home-opener he completed
his first varsity game and never looked back; playing in all twenty-eight regular season games, all three post season games
and missed only one game during the five day, six game run to the National Championship. He scored his first varsity goal
on November 19th in a 9-1 win over the Dubuque Devils and added two more assists over the regular season. Easton will
look to take on the duties of replacing the grit and toughness to the Metros game, lost by the the graduating Chase Lewison.

   Taylor Frerichs
Metros 2016-20

Sophomore Taylor Frerichs returns expected to build on his previous season. Splitting another season between the
Varsity and JV squads, he logged log fifty regular season games. In twenty-four junior varsity games recorded thirteen
goals, ten assists, twenty-three points and forty-four penalty minutes; leading the JV team in all four categories.
He would see time in twenty-six varsity games, and while he was scoreless, he did add a pair of assists along the way.
Taylor would see time in all three MHSHL tournament games, scoring the first goal in the opening game against the
Waterloo Warriors.  He would also make the team as the Metros captured the USA Hockey National Championship,
playing in all six games and scoring a goal in a 5-1 win over the Billings Bulls.

Drake Beller
Metros 2015-18
2017 Metros and MHSHL Leading Scorer

Drake Beller joins the Metros for his third and final season. Expected to carry the mail for the Metros offence; and
he does not disappoint. Playing a complete schedule he records twenty-six goals and adds a, Sioux City record setting,
forty-three assists to lead the team in scoring. This makes Drake a three-time Metros High Scorer and the League’s leading
scorer this season. He is a lock for his second selection to the MHSHL’s All-Star Team and his first to the All League Team.

single point shy recording  twenty-six goals and forty-three assists.  However, his forty-three assists or one & half per game is a
new Jr. Musketeers/ Metros scoring record. His sixty-nine points is also tops among all MHSHL league scorers this season and
second best among Jr. Musketeers/Metros all-time scorers.  Over three varsity seasons, Drake missed only one game; he recorded
129 points, averaging a point & half point every game.

Grant Newman
Metros 2014-18

Senior Grant Newman joins the Metros for his fourth and final season. He is the expected leader of the Metros
defensive corps that is both deep in experience and big in stature. Prior to the start of the season, he selected to play
for Team Midwest; it composed of some of the best MHSHL high school players from this season. They will play a
18-20 game schedule starting in Minnesota and concluding with the Silver Stick Regional Tournament in Westminster, Co.

Grant will perform as expected this season; helping lead the Metros to a regular season championship, posting a 25-3 record. The

President’s Senior Academic Award. Grant was selected to the MHSHL All-Star team and the MHSHL All-League Team
He is a second time selection to the America’s Showcase team and was honored with the Metros top defenseman award this season.

Christian Peterson

Metros 2014-18

Christian Peterson would log four seasons for the Metros. His dependable blue line skills were always in need and it showed as
he again logged a full schedule playing in twenty-four  JV and twenty-three varsity games. The three time JV Heavy Hitter switched
up his game a bit this season and notched three goals and five assists grabbing the remaining High Scorer spot. He recorded a pair
of varsity assists this season, but his value wasn’t in his point production it was in his defensive reliability. Petey was as solid on the
blue line as the come. He played a smart game and used his size and strength to his advantage. He rarely took bad penalties and was
one of the “unofficial” team leaders on both squads and was an integral part of the Metros League and Tournament Championships.

Joe Erickson                                                                        Smith Archer
Metros 2016-18                                                                               Metros 2017-Present

Joe Erickson
joined the Metros the prior season as a Junior.  That season he logged eighteen games with the JV squad and
another eight games with the varsity. As a senior he would log a full JV schedule and see time in another (update) varsity
games. Prior to playing for the Metros the last two season Joey played two seasons for the Kansas City Saints.

Smith Archer is first season sophomore; he would get a late start this season contemplating a return to to playing
hockey. Getting back at it with twenty JV games remaining, he bags four goals and three more assists. Expected to
return next season, Smitty is anticipated goal scorer and eventual team leader.

Midwest High School Hockey League (MHSHL) Tournament Championship
March 2nd-4th / Ames, IA

Quarter-Final Game
2-Metros vs. Waterloo Warriors-1 (2OT)

March 2nd, 2018
The Metros return to the Tournament as the the number one seeded team, drawing a rematch of last year’s championship
duel with the Waterloo Warriors. Just like last year’s game, a single goal would determine the outcome. In a defensive duel,
both teams could only muster a single goal.  Drake Beller with a tally in the second period and a third period Waterloo shot
got past Blake Beller just at the halfway point of the final period. The game remained knotted as regulation ended and it
would take two extra periods before Conor Sand found the net and sent the Metros to the quarter finals with a 2-1 victory.

Drake Beller takes a pass from James page on a Grant Newman break-out and beats the Waterloo goaltender; tieing
the game at a goal a piece. The game remains tied well past regulation as the game heads into it’s second overtime.
Again it is the defensive corps that sets up this game winner; Walt Werden moves the puck up ice to speedster Reece
McDonald feeds winger Conner Sand for the game winner, sending the Metros to the second round.

Semi-final Game
1-Metros vs. Des Moines Capitols-0 (2OT)

March 3rd, 2018
Drawing another last season rematch, this one pitted the Metros taking on the Des Moines Capitols. Last season, it
was the Metros who played spoiler to the Caps, as they derailed the one-loss regular season champions and tournament
favorites 6-5. Like Friday’s game, it was another defensive struggle, this time neither team could light the lamp. The Metros
launched forty shots on goal and Blake Beller stopped twenty-six attempts, before…

Walt Werden’s shot from the point, whizzes past the Capitols goaltender-sending the Metros to the tournament finals for
a second season in a row. The winning goal comes just a minute and five seconds in to the second overtime period.

Championship Game
4-Metros vs. Mason City Mohawks-2

March 4th, 2018

Frerichs

three point championship game outing.

game but limited his time in the box to just a single minor over the six tournament games.

Right:
Freshman Easton Ransford‘s goal to just crack the varsity line-up, was far surpassed this season when he ended-up

USA Hockey National Championship tournament

The Metros finish
the season in second place with a 26-3-0-0-3 record. Four points behind season champs the Waterloo Warriors.

Central Division:  Ames Little Cyclones, Des Moines Capitols, Des Moines Oak Leafs, Mason City Mohawks

The Metros start the season and are again expected to be one of the top teams in the League. Reece McDonald,
Taylor Frerichs, Max Beller will provide the firepower and goaltender Blake Beller will protect the net. As the season
progressed, it looked to be a battle between Waterloo and Sioux City for the regular season championship.

The two teams meet in December with each grabbing a win, further building the anticipation of another meeting during
the final tournament. However, Waterloo looks unstoppable for the remainder of the season and the Metros lose a pair
of  heartbreakers to Freemont & Kansas City and leave three overtime losses on the table; nixing their chances at a
repeat regular season championship.

As the post season tournament gets underway everyone is looking to the assumed championship game match-up between
the League’s two best teams; Sioux City and Waterloo. The Warriors cruise into the final game, however, the Metros are
up-set in the semi finals and settle for an eventual third place finish

March 6th-8th / Ames, IA

Quarter-Final Game
3-Metros vs.
Lincoln Stars-1

March 6th, 2020
For the second season in a row, the Metros are paired up with the Lincoln Stars. The Metros enter the contest fresh off
a pair of victories earlier in the season as well as pair the prior weekend over the Stars. However, Lincoln doesn’t go away
easy and keeps the game even after  the first period. The second period starts with a surprise goal by Tyler Ownby just thirty-
seven seconds into the period.  Minutes later Taylor Frerichs puts the Metros up by two. Lincoln does mounts comeback,
but a second goal, late-in-the-period by Taylor squashes any hopes for a Stars rally. Colin Patrick stops all but one of the
Stars seventeen attempts, in what is his twenty-second game allowing just one or fewer total goals, as the Metros
advance to the second round.

Semi-Final Game
2-Metros vs.
Kansas City Jets-3 2OT

March 7th, 2020
Sioux City enters the second round taking on the Kansas City Jets. Having split the only two meetings between these teams
all season. For the second day in a row the Metros go up by two goals on red-lighters by Easton Ransford and Taylor Frerichs.
However, after the first period, its all Kansas City. They tie the game on second and third period goals; sending the game
into overtime. Midway into the second extra period, the Jets’ leading scorer puts an impossible angle shot in the top right
corner for the game winner. The Metros record just twenty-two shots on goal while Colin Patrick turns away forty-seven of  fifty.

Consolation Game
5-Metros vs.
Waterloo Warriors-2

March 8th, 2020
In what many would have guessed be the championship game pairing, the Metros meet up with the Waterloo Warriors in
the consolation game. The previous day, the Warriors took a tumble against the fifth seeded Cedar Rapids Roughriders. This
one is close for two periods as Taylor Frerichs and Tyler Ownby record the games three goals so far. However, the third period
is all Metros. They pepper the Waterloo goalie with fifty total shots and limit both Warrior leading scorers to just a single goals each.
Taylor grabs his second goal of  the game and Smith Archer piles on thirteen seconds later, giving the Metros a three goal cushion.
Waterloo does record a second goal of the game, but an empty netter by Dayson Tucker seals the deal for the Metros.
