Gaining popularity, youth hockey in Sioux City required that the eligible age was again lowered to include Mite aged players (5-7).
Eight 5 year olds tip-toed on the ice that season and two of them, Duane Erickson (Metros Class of ’87) and Brian Reynolds (Metros
Class of ’87) became the first SYHA Players to go completely through the SYHA program.

The Metros participate for the first time in the annual Des Moines Invitational Tournament on January 18th & 19. Waterloo would
join the tournament as the third Iowa team as well as Albert Lea & South St. Paul from Minnesota. They would make it to the final
game but lose to the hosts in a 7-6 barn-burner.

Spring of ’75 the groundwork for the Iowa High School Hockey League (IHSHL) begins and the first season commences that

42 shots on goal, the Jr. Musketeers would lose by a single goal to the (Waterloo) Columbus Sailors 5-4.

SYHA Pancake Day held an unusual for for the Jr. Musketeers. A college team from Emo, Ontario stopped by to take on the high

able to beat the powerful Sailors, unfortunately they fall short in their second bid at an IHSHL Championship.

These Jr. Musketeer jerseys worn this season were handed down form the Musketeers by owner Gary Lipshutz. The
round Musketeer logo was removed and the jerseys worn sans any logo.

The Metros would return to the state tournament with a considerably smaller and less experienced line-up. However, strong
goaltending  and a speedy offence made up for lack of physicality and the team held their own throughout the tournament.
Unfortunately, a second round loss would send them home with a third place finish
.

Note:
Name change to Sioux City Metro. This was done to help hockey players gain creditability as true high school
athletes and to have hockey accepted as an official high school sport. Just like today, players are not limited to the city
limits; with eligible players also from the surrounding metro area.

After a third place showing at the State Tournament last season, the Metros return with only three seniors and finish
the season with a dismal 2-14 regular season record and an eighteh place finish at State.

A policy change at the Auditorium regarding local event tenants caused SYHA to explore new avenues for ice time.
In the summer of ’81 an inflatable Bubble was purchased and would be the new hone of SYHA hockey events. It was
relocated from Jackson, Tennessee to South Sioux City (NE) where it was constructed and completed ready for the
start of this new season.

This SYHA hockey season would start at the Bubble. An air filled dome that was always 20 degrees colder than outside,
it was the only indoor building that often carried a wind-chill factor!!!  This would be the home of SYHA & the Metros for
only one season. A storm the following summer would destroy the bubble.

Sioux City, Mason City

The Metros finish the season in second place with a 13-4-1 record. Todd Coyle with thirty-two points and Ross

Scott Patrick is the IHSHL’s top Silver Glove selection. Four players make the All-Star Team and three players
are selected to the All- League Team. The Metros receive the regular season IHSHL Sportsmanship Award.

State Tournament Mason City, IA / North Iowa Rec Center / March 4th-6th

Sioux City starts out strong with tournament wins over Des Moines Public and the Waterloo Warriors. Unfortunately,
the Metros would fall short in the tournament championship game losing to Des Moines Valley-Dowling. However,
the program was starting to come together and a respect around the league for Sioux City Hockey was starting to build.

At the time, nobody really notices, but an IHSHL high school dynasty is building, as the final two seasons of
the 80’s wind down!!!

The Iowa High School League (IHSHL) opens play with eight teams playing a twenty game schedule. Dubuque rejoins
the league after a four season absence. Teams are divided into East and West Divisions

East Division:
Dubuque, Mason City, Waterloo Public & Columbus
West Division: Ames, Des Moines Urbandale, Des Moines Valley-Dowling, Sioux City

This season has powerhouse Valley-Dowling running the table, however, only three points separate the next four
teams in the league. The Metros 11-9 record is good for fifth place regular season finish. Shane Keith pours in
forty points this season to lead the team in scoring and finish among the league’s top seven scorers. They place four
players in the All-Star Game and two on the IHSHL All-State team.

State Tournament Des Moines, IA / Hickman Arena / March 3rd-5th

Sioux City opens the tournament with a win over Mason City. The second round sees the Metros matched-up against
heavily favored Valley-Dowling. While the game is close the Tigers are able to eek-out a two goal victory. The Metros
head to the consolation game, but are again defeated by just a single tally by Waterloo Columbus.

Former Sioux City Musketeer and St. Louis Billikan Dave Davies takes over the Metros Head Coaching Position.

East Division: Ames, Dubuque, Mason City, Waterloo Public & Columbus
West Division: Des Moines Urbandale, Des Moines Valley-Dowling, Omaha Gladiators & Sioux City

The Metros finish the season with a 14-6-2 record good enough for fourth place in the league.
Brett Austin and TJ Reinsch both lead the team in scoring with thirty-eight points.

State Tournament Waterloo, IA / McElroy Auditorium / March 1st-4th

Sioux City breezes past Dubuque in the opening round and then dispatches higher seeded Valley-Dowling in a one goal,
second-round nail-biter. The championship game sees the Metros fall the Waterloo Warriors.
The Metros grab their second runner-up claim in three seasons. This is a game that everyone knows that on paper, this
team should have won!!!
However, they would return with almost the identical team the following season with different results.

The 90’s would begin a run of Sioux City’s dominance in the IHSH & MHSHL hockey leagues.

Starting in 1988 & 90 with IHSHL Championship runner-up trophies. The Metros return in both 1991 & 92 with
Championship wins. After a runner-up finish in 93, they again would win Champion status in 94. The Metro would
go on to win two more championships in 98 & 99 and close-out the decade with a runner-up finish in 2000. They
would again win the Championship in 2003.

The 1990’s made for a Sioux City Championship streak that is by far tops in the IHSHL & MHSHL leagues. During
those ten season the Metros captured two Regular Season Championships & appeared in eight State Championship
games; winning the title five times.

The Metros start the weekend on a roll, beating Ames in overtime and the Gladiators by a pair of tallies. By the time the
championship game rolled around there wasn’t a person in the house that didn’t think the Metros wouldn’t win their third
championship. Valley/Dowling didn’t like the idea and beat the Metros 3-1.

Also notable is the transition of coaches, Dave Davies would step down this season. Assistant Coach and another
former Musketeer
Jimmy Peck would take the reins. His similar coaching philosophy would insure the continued
dominance of Metros hockey.

State Tournament Omaha, NE / Hitchcock Arena / March 7th-9th
This marks the first time that the post-season Tournament has been held outside the State of Iowa.

Sioux City opens the weekend with an upset win over the Omaha Gladiators. The second round sees the Metros pair-up
with the nearly unbeatable Omaha Jr. Lancers. The Metros stay in it for much of the game but eventually run low on gas
and fall the Lancers. This loss sends them to the consolation game, taking on east division winners the Des Moines
Capitols. With the offence still struggling the Metros can’t get the needed points and have to settle for a fourth place finish.

At the time, this middle of the pack finish during the regular season & a third place showing at State is just that…however
as the big picture develops, it is a Sioux City program hearting up to begin the second half of what would become a
twelve season IHSHL High School dynasty

Sioux City Metros Jr. Varsity

The Junior Varsity would win the regular season championship this season, setting the table for two unprecedented championship
weekends next March in Sioux City and St. Joe

The JV team tops the league with a 20-2-4 record and records the JV’s first League championship. They place five scorers (Matt
Tonjum, Dusty Browning, Brant Mozak, Dustin White and Robbie Lessard) among the top ten league scorers.

JV State Tournament held February 26th-March 1st in St. Joe, MS

SYHA would start off the season in their own building. The 2.5 million dollar IBP Ice Center opened for youth and high school
practices. The new facility featured a NHL sized playing surface, four locker-rooms, coaches & referee rooms, pro shop and a
concession and large lobby area. The new building allowed SYHA to again begin to promote the program. For a number of years
no new players were allowed to join due to the limited practice and game times.

Did You Know…the orange seats currently in the IBP Ice Center were from the Auditorium.  Originally, the removable seats,
“C” section, These were the seats that folded in-out in front of the Balcony section.

Varsity State Tournament held in Des Moines, IA / 95 KGGO Arena /  February 24th-26th.

The Metros have a rough weekend dropping all three contests. Opening the tournament with a match-up against the
regular season champs and eventual Tournament Champions the Des Moines Oak Leafs; they fall in a sound 8-1
beating. After that, it’s a number four meeting with Quad City but the Metros still can’t get the offence started and are
defeated 5-2. By the time the final game starts, Sioux City is finally able to generate enough offence to defeat Waterloo
in an overtime barn-burner and grab the last available winners slot.

Just like two seasons ago, the Metros open the tournament paired-up with the regular season champions, the Des
Moines Oak Leafs. And again, it’s another sound beating by the eventual three-time tournament champions. They can
foil the Leafs just once, as the Leafs hang ten goals on the Metros. The second sees they up against the other Des
Moines entry and in a shoot-out defeat the Capitols. The Metros enter the third game of the tournament spent, and
they fall to Mason City in a five goal blanking.

West:  Des Moines Oak Leafs,  Kansas City Out Laws & Stars, Omaha, Lincoln, Sioux Falls, Sioux City

The Metros struggle again this season, but their 18-10-2 record does get them back into the tournament. For the
second season in a row, sophomore Colton Kramer leads the Metros in scoring with a team leading forty-two
red-lighters and twenty-six helpers. His sixty-eight points is third best among all MHSHL scorers. The Metros place
a single player on the All-League team and a pair of players on the All-Star team and in the Chicago showcase.

Varsity State Tournament held in Ames, IA / Ames-ISU Arena /  February 26th- 28th.

The Metros open-up against the second best team in the league this season. Unfortunately, the Metros offence is
non-existent and defeated by the Outlaws in a three goal shut-out. Round two’s offence is still AWAL and the Metros
fall to Waterloo 7-2. With the final winners slot still available, the Metros generate some much need offence; scoring
four times, twice as many as the Flyers, and grab an end of the season win good for seventh place.

The Midwest High School Hockey League (MHSHL) opens play with twelve teams playing a twenty-eight game schedule.
The League adopts a three division format: East, West and Central

East: Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Quad City, Waterloo
Central: Ames, Des Moines Oak Leafs, Des Moines Capitols, Mason City
West:  Kansas City Jets, Omaha, Lincoln, Sioux City

The Metros struggles for a third season, but this time their 12-15 record is good enough for the final
spot and a trip to the tournament. Branson Carlson is the Metros leading scorer for a second season. He
leads the team in both goals and assists with nineteen and seventeen.  They do still place three players on
the MHSHL All-Star team and fourth Metro player to the America’s Showcase team.

Varsity State Tournament held in Ames, IA / Ames-ISU Arena /  February 22nd- 24th.

Just making the tournament usually means the best team in the league is up next and the Metros are correct.
Meeting up with the regular season champions and recent powerhouse Des Moines Oak Leafs. The game stays
relatively close but the Metros can’t get the momentum goals and they fall to the eventual champions. The second
round’s foe is division rival Omaha Jr. Lancers where the Metros post their first win of the tourney. The final
round is against another division rival, but they go down to the Lincoln Jr. Stars grabbing a sixth place finish.

The Metros JV squad finishes the season with a 14-14 record and a trip the League tournament. A first round win
over favorite Dubuque made for the start of a hopeful weekend, but losses to Kansas City and Des Moines

The Midwest High School Hockey League (MHSHL) opens play with twelve teams playing a twenty-eight game schedule.
40th Season of the IHSHL/MHSHL

East: Dubuque,Cedar Rapids,  Quad City, Waterloo
Central: Ames, Des Moines Oak Leafs, Des Moines Capitols, Mason City
West:  Kansas City Jets, Omaha, Lincoln, Sioux City

The Metros start the season with a win over the Oak Leafs and a very close contest the next week with the
eventual undefeated Des Moines Capitols. However, the Metros have a tough time maintaining momentum
and finish the season with a 14-12-1-1- record, third in the west and sixth overall. Once again it’s Skyler Beller
and Tanner Frerichs leading the way for the Metros; Skyler with fifty-six points and Tanner with forty-eight.
Both players are among the top ten MHSHL scorers. The Metros place four players on the All-Star Team
and two each on the All-League and America’s Showcase Team.

Varsity State Tournament held in Ames, IA / Ames-ISU Arena /  February 26th- 28th.

Sioux City opens the weekend paired-up with the third seeded Dubuque Devils. In a close battle, the underdogs
prevail and advance to the second round. Waiting for them is the second best team in the league and eventual
tournament Champions from Kansas City. This one is all Jets and they send the Metros to the consolation round.
In the consolation game they would defeat a heavily favored Des Moines Oak Leafs in a shoot-out for Sioux
City’s first showing in the League tournament in fourteen years.

East: Dubuque,Cedar Rapids,  Quad City, Waterloo
Central: Ames, Des Moines Oak Leafs, Des Moines Capitols, Mason City
West:  Kansas City Jets, Omaha, Lincoln, Sioux City

The Metros start the season on a tear; they win ten of their first eleven games of the season, making them
one of the teams to beat this season. They cool down mid-stretch, including three heat breaking losses to
teams they should have beat. They still win a majority of the remaining games; finishing in fourth
place with a 19-7-2 regular season record. Tanner Frerichs and James Page lead the team in scoring with
Tanner’s team leading thirty-nine assists and James’ team high twenty-seven goals. Drake Beller is on
their heels recording forty-seven points. All three players are MHSHL top six scorers; Tanner second, James
fifth and Drake sixth. The Metros place four players on the All-Star Team, One on the All-League Team
and four on the America’s Showcase Team.

Varsity State Tournament held in Ames, IA / Ames-ISU Arena /  March 3rd- 5th.

The fourth seeded Metros start the weekend with the evenly matched Des Moines Oak Leafs. This one remained
close until the end, but a pair of Metros empty netters made this 5-1 win sound easier that it really was. They
would draw the heavily favored and almost undefeated Des Moines Capitols in the second round. There, the
Metros would proceeded to
stun everyone in attendance, handing the Caps just their second regulation loss of
the season with a game winner with less than a minute remaining.  Sioux City entered the championship
game with high expectations, taking on the Waterloo Warriors. However, a successful penalty shot with a
1:16 remaining, ended the Metros run for a Tournament Championship.

East:

Central: Ames, Des Moines Oak Leafs, Des Moines Capitols, Mason City
West:  Kansas City Jets, Omaha, Lincoln, Sioux City

The Metros return this season with an Unfinished Business attitude this season. They blast through the regular
season, losing just three games and finishing with a 25-2-1 record. This is the first Metros regular season champion-
ship in twenty-five seasons. Drake Beller and James Page lead both the Metros in scoring as well as the Midwest
League. Sioux City dominates the MHSHL Awards list this season. Blake Beller is selected the Tournament MVP
and Dave LeGree the MHSHL Coach of the year. The Metros place four players on the All-League team, six
on the All-Star team and two on the Showcase team.

Varsity State Tournament held in Ames, IA / Ames-ISU Arena /  March 2nd-4th.

The Metros head to the post-season tournament as the expected favorites.  The Metros first draw is a rematch of last
season’s championship game with the Waterloo Warriors. This one
stayed tied through two overtimes but Sioux
City would extract their revenge in this 2-1 win. Game two is also a rematch with the league’s top team last
season the Des Moines Capitols. The Metros shocked the tournament favorites last season and they did
it again
this season winning on a double overtime goal. The Metros would match-up against Mason City and while
the game stayed close, Sioux City would defeat the ‘Hawks 4-3 winning their first Championship since 2003.

USA Hockey National Championship Tournament / Plymouth, MN / March 22nd-26th

The Metros would be selected to represent the State of Iowa and the MHSHL at the USA Hockey National
Championships. Over the five day-six game tournament the Metros shocked team from all over the country
beating state championship teams Ohio, Texas, Colorado, Montana and Florida.

The Midwest High School Hockey League (MHSHL) opens play with thirteen teams playing a thirty-two game schedule.
Freemont Flyers join the league. Single division format is adopted.

Ames, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Des Moines Oak Leafs & Capitols, Freemont,
Kansas City, Omaha,  Lincoln, Mason City, Quad City, Waterloo, Sioux City

The Metros start the season and are again expected to be one of the top teams in the League, and as the season
progresses, it looks to be a battle between Waterloo and Sioux City for the regular season championship.
The
two teams meet in December with each grabbing a win, further building the anticipation of a race for the regular
season championship.
However, Waterloo is unstoppable for the remainder of the season and the Metros lose a
pair
of heartbreakers to Freemont & Kansas City and leave three overtime losses on the table; nixing their chances
at a
repeat regular season championship. They finish the season in second place sporting a 26-3-3 record.

Taylor Frerichs leads the Metros in scoring with fifty-one points, his twenty-two goals and twenty-nine assists
are both best among all team scorers. he is also a top eight scorer in the league. The Metros place five players on
the All-Star Team, One on the All-League team and two in the Showcase.

Varsity State Tournament held in Ames, IA / Ames-ISU Arena /  March 1st-3rd.

The Metros enter the tournament seeded second but still it’s a toss-up between the league’s top three teams who
finished within five points of each other. The Metros start the weekend with Lincoln and offer-up a generous dose
of Sioux City offence; hanging five goals and shutting-out the Jr. Stars. The second round sees the foe a bit tougher
in number three Cedar Rapids and they are up-set sending them to the consolation round. The Metros rebound the
next day with an easy win over the Jr. Lancers and grabbing a disappointing third place finish.

Seniors Max Beller and Reece McDonald are selected to play for Team Midwest at the 2018 Silver Stick Regional
Tournament held in Colorado. Team Midwest dominates the division; winning the tournament and advancing to the
International Silver Stick tournament later this season. Team Midwest  returns in January to the International Tournament
where they are again one of the dominate teams. Working through the round robin; Team Midwest advances to the
Championship game falling short to Halton Hills of Ontario, Canada

Kansas City, Omaha,  Lincoln, Mason City, Okoboji, Quad City, Waterloo, Sioux City

The Metros are again expected to be one of the top teams in the league and prove it, finishing with a 26-4-1 record. Their
fifty-four points is good for a second place tie, just two points out of first. Taylor Frerichs is again the team’s leading
scorer; both his thirty-two goals and thirty-five assists are team highs. His sixty-seven points is seventh best among all
league top scorers. Colin Patrick receives the Silver Glove Award as the top goaltender in the league.  The Metros
place three players on
the All-Star Team and two the All-League team. They also place six players on the pre-season
Team Midwest/Silverstick tournament team. The post season tournament is canceled due to Covid restrictions.

Varsity State Tournament held in Ames, IA / Ames-ISU Arena /  March 6th-8th.

With their sights set on another chance at a championship the Metros start out the weekend with a sound beating
of the Lincoln Jr. Stars. Waiting for them is the other second place team from Kansas City. As expected the game
is a close one and takes a pair of extra periods to determine a winner. Unfortunately it’s not the Metros and it’s off
to another consolation game. Sunday’s game is the game everyone though would be for the championship; a
Waterloo and Sioux City match-up. The Warriors are out of gas and offer little resistance to the Metros explosive
offence and stingy goaltending. And just like that it’s another third place finish for the Metros.

The Midwest High School Hockey League (MHSHL) opens play with twelve teams.
Due to the Covid restrictions, two storm damaged rinks and an early-season Covid related interruption, the teams played an
unequal number of games.
The League would use RPI Rankings (Ratings Percentage Index) to compute standings.

Okoboji Mamouths and Freemont Flyers leave the league.

Ames, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Des Moines Oak Leafs & Capitols,
Kansas City, Omaha,  Lincoln, Mason City, Quad City, Waterloo, Sioux City

This season saw many Covid related challenges and despite a month long shut-down of student sports the Metros
were still able to play a twenty-eight game schedule posting a 16-10-1-1 record for a seventh place finish.
Tyler Ownby leads the team in scoring grabbing a team leading eighteen goals and nineteen assists. Right on
his heels are Chase Mann with ten red-lighters and twenty helpers and Kolton Kane with nine tallies and a team
leading twenty-one assists. The Metros place one player on the All-League Team and three on the All-Star Team.
There is no Showcase Tournament this season because of Covid.

Varsity State Tournament held in Ames, IA / Ames-ISU Arena /  March 4th-7th.

This year’s tournament format is altered because of the Covid restrictions; the fifth/sixth place game eliminated
and all twelve teams makes the tournament. However, Omaha and Ames drop-out because of excessive Covid cases.
Sioux City enter the tournament facing the number three Waterloo and while the games is close, the Metros fall by
one goal, ending their tourney time.

Fresh off last season’s tournament championship, the nearly identical Metros look like the team to beat this season.
They finish the regular season with a 28-4-0-0 record winning their fourth Regular Season Championship. Nate
Solma
and Grant Harder
are the team’s top two scorers. Nate records thirty-seven goals and twenty-five assists
and Grant grabs twenty-three goals and a team leading thirty-four helpers. Goaltender Cameron Patrick is the

Varsity State Tournament held in Des Moines, IA / Mid-American Ice Plex /  March 1st-3rd.

The Metros start the weekend out in good fashion with a four goal outing and a shut-out win over Ames.
However, game two brings on a tougher opponent from Kansas City.  Unfortunately, the favored Metros
fail to generate any offence, scoring just one goal and surrendering five to the eventual Tournament Champions.
Game three sees the Metros of old, hanging nine goals on Waterloo and giving up just a single tally.

USA Hockey National Championship Tournament / West Chester, PA/ March 20th-24th

Despite a disappointing finish at the post-season tournament, the MHSHL Regular Season Champions are selected
to represent the State of Iowa and the MHSHL at the USA Hockey National Championships. Over the five day-six
game tournament the Metros shocked teams from all over the country beating state championship teams South
Dakota, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Florida and New York. This is the Metros second USA Hockey
National Championship having also won in 2018.
